Kay Kenny in Fire in the Belly Exhibition, Woodstock, NY

Artist and CALA faculty member, Kay Kenny, has work included in Fire in the Belly at Burnette Gallery, 31 Mill Hill Road in Woodstock from October 11 – November 25. The opening reception, which coincides with widely acclaimed Woodstock Film Festival, is tomorrow, Saturday October 13, from 6-9 pm.

Fire in the Belly, curated by artists Laura Gurton and Carole Kunstadt, celebrates the female spirit.

Identity, empowerment, family, relationships, fantasy, mythology, sensuality as well as the biological, emotional and spiritual are explored by twenty six artists from the Hudson Valley and greater New York.

Kenny is currently teaching Photography:The Basics at CALA and, starting tomorrow, the High School Academy course NYC Through the Camera Lens

Storytelling on Instagram: The Sev7nth Circle Begins …

The Sev7nth Circle is a feminist sci-fi thriller about a young woman named ROO (age 23) and an ancient society of women called the Sev7nth Circle. The story unfolds via Instagram and a website (sev7nthcircle.org) and will include real world “events.” Chapter one is about the lost and erased women of science, who will be revealed, at the end of ROO’s quest to open a secret portal. This is basically what Marilyn Oliva, one of its creators, told me early this summer when she asked if I would like to play one of the guardians of the sev7nth circle. We met in a direct action activist group after the 2018 presidential election. I said yes, of course! It’s hard to imagine what storytelling looks like on Instagram and the best way to “get it” is to follow the series through your Instagram account @sev7nthcirle

The creators of the Sev7nth Circle are Marilyn Oliva – an Affiliated Scholar at Fordham University and a freelance archivist, and Jan Libby – writer, designer, and producer of immersive and interactive stories. 
The Project: We wanted to tell the story of the women who have been whitewashed from history in a compelling and unusual way. To do this we developed the idea of a limbo-like universe where women from the Humanities, Arts and Sciences languish and wait to be released into the public consciousness. We then created an Instagram series about two young women who go on a sort of personal quest–to discover the whereabouts of one of their mothers–and stumble on a secret society that both guards and seeks the return of these forgotten, lost, and erased women. Instagram is the perfect platform to share the Sev7nth Circle story: it allows us to use a fun combination of content: still images, video, gifs, music, and text to tell our feminist sci-fi thriller and lets followers stay connected to the unfolding story whenever they check into Instagram.

Special Event: A Reading of DOUBT by John Patrick Shanley, directed by John Erman

Please join us for a special event on Thursday, October 18, from 10am-1pm. Acclaimed Broadway, film, and TV actors will read John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play DOUBT, directed by NYUSPS CALA instructor John Erman. 

Doubt is set in a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, where a strong-minded woman wrestles with conscience and uncertainty as she is faced with concerns about one of her male colleagues. This play by John Patrick Shanley—the Bronx-born-and-bred playwright and Academy Award-winning author of Moonstruck—dramatizes issues straight from today’s headlines within a world re-created with knowing detail and a judicious eye.

We are pleased to announce the NYUSPS Center for Applied Liberal Arts Fall 2018 Film Series THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE: VISIONS OF DIASPORA ON FILM IN AMERICA AND ABROAD!

As immigration ignites new conversations in the U.S.,  it continues to be a divisive issue across the globe. This film series explores the experiences of people who leave their homeland seeking a better life and new opportunities. From the U.S. to Italy and Germany, these films portray the values and aspirations, dreams and nightmares associated with the places where immigrants and refugees settle.  As much as these stories are about exile and marginalization, they are also about connecting with others and the power of a human bond that transcends geographic borders and stereotypes. Held in connection with CALA course: VISIONS OF AMERICA ON FILM (CINE1-CE9013).

NYU’s Grey Art Gallery to Hold Exhibition on Italian Neorealism

Next month, NYU’s Grey Art Gallery will unveil a new exhibition on Italian neorealism, a national art movement which arose in response to the destabilizing impacts of World War II. Through photography, film, and literature, its contributors sought to capture the everyday hardships of the working and lower classes and contend with the moral implications of their bleak conditions.

Whereas previous exhibitions have focused on the movement’s cinematic products, the Grey Art Gallery’s curators have deliberately chosen to highlight its photography, featuring the work of over 60 artists across 175 images. The collection will pair the photographs with the publications in which they originally appeared, keeping them firmly grounded in historical context. A series of talks and screenings will also be held in conjunction with the exhibition.

Jenny McPhee, the Director of the Center for Applied Liberal Arts, will be introducing Giuseppe De Santis’ 1949 film Bitter Rice (Riso amaro) in a free screening at the Casa Italiana on November 19th from 6:30-8:30pm. RSVP to casaitaliananyu.org.

The Book Review Section: An Insider’s View Panel Event

Next month, the National Arts Club will be hosting a lively and frank panel discussion bringing together some of New York’s most influential reviewers and editors, including Pamela Paul (editor of the New York Times Book Review) and Jonathan Segura, executive editor at Publishers Weekly. Panelists discuss the work they do, their love of books, the responsibilities they feel to their readers and, most notably, to writers. The panel, led by David Masello of The National Arts Club’s literary committee, will also consider the relationship between good reviews and book sales, what makes a compelling book review, the recent turn towards author profiles and Q&As in favor of traditional book reviews, and much more.

Two Upcoming Roundtable Events on Empowering Women in Localization

Women in Localization will be hosting two roundtable discussions this month—one in Boston on June 14th and one in New York City on June 21st. Localization is the professional practice of adapting products and services to specific markets. This not only includes translating content into local languages, but also making modifications based on consumer habits, cultural customs, and regional modes of organizing and quantifying information (ex. time and date formats, currency and measurement units).
 
In accordance with WiL’s mission, the talks will be centered around empowering women in the field, addressing topics like increasing visibility within corporate structures, handling gender discrimination, mentoring women in the workplace, and much more.

One Book One New York – Free Flash Fiction Workshop

In honor of Jennifer Egan’s Manhattan Beach being selected for the 2018 One Book One New York initiative, NYUSPS will be hosting a series of events to kick off the conversation – and to keep it going all summer long.

On Tuesday, June 19th, Join Julia Strayer, author and writing instructor in NYU’s School of Professional Studies, for a free writing workshop, where you will try your hand at writing flash fiction—condensed, pithy stories that move or amuse readers in about 1,000 words or less. Learn what flash fiction is, see how it works, read and discuss some examples, and then write your own. (You do not need to read the book before participating in the workshop.) The workshop is free and open to the public. We will meet in the 5thfloor lounge of 7 East 12th Street, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, on Tuesday, June 19.
