CALA Instructor Meera Thompson to Show Paintings in Atlantic Gallery Solo Exhibition

This June, NYU SPS CALA instructor Meera Thompson will be exhibiting a new series of paintings in a solo show at the Atlantic Gallery in Chelsea. Please see the press release below for full details.

MEERA THOMPSON: ALLEGRO
June 5-23, 2018

Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of ALLEGRO, an exhibition of recent work by Meera Thompson. The paintings will be on view from Tuesday, June 5 through Saturday, June 23, 2018 and a reception for the artist will be held on Thursday evening, June 7 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

Meera Thompson’s highly expressive gestural abstractions explore the way imagination transforms visual memories. Conceived as a series and virtually unfurling like Chinese scrolls or unfolding like Japanese screens, each group of images in ALLEGRO recreates the fleeting pace of passing moments. Painted in gouache, ink and watercolor on heavy cotton papers, the lush painterly textures and sensuously saturated colors of her works evoke the quickening tempo of changing scenes.

ALLEGRO is Meera Thompson’s sixth solo show at Atlantic Gallery. She studied at the Art Students League, graduated from Vassar College, and earned an M.F.A. from Boston University. She teaches Studio Art at the School of Professional Studies at New York University.

Museum of the City of New York Hosting Panel on Art During World War I

Historically, some of the most important periods in the development of art and culture have coincided with wartime. It is in times of distress and death that artists see how important it is to fight against the horrors of modern life with an arsenal of music, painting, and literature. This year, which marks the hundredth anniversary of the United States becoming involved in World War I, the Museum of the City of New York is hosting an exhibit on 20th century modernism, Posters and Patriotism: Selling World War I in New York, which explores the themes of art in relation to war.

In tandem with their current exhibit, the Museum of the City of New York will be hosting a panel on June 20 called “Culture Goes to War.” The panel features four art historians, including CALA professor Nicholas Birns. The night will also feature a performance by Michael Lowney, comprising songs from World War I including “Over There.” For those interested, tickets are available online, and you can get a discounted rate of only $10 by using the code POSTERS.

PEN America World Voices Festival Translation Events

Sunday marked the start of the annual PEN America World Voices Festival, which is dedicated to the promotion of free expression and the discussion of topical political and social events in the literary world and beyond.  This Friday, the festival will be hosting two exciting translation panel events: Translating Women’s Voices (presented by NYU’s Deutsches Haus), followed by one of their most popular events, the Translation Slam. Translation Slam

Hosted by Michael F. Moore A Festival favorite for six years running, the Slam delves into the larger cultural, social, and political changes that come into play when a translator chooses this word or that. Two poets, four translators. Palestinian poet Najwan Darwish will read a poem that will be rendered/reinvented from Arabic into English by two different translators. Jamaican-American poet Staceyann Chin will read one of her works, which will be transformed into both standard and regional Italian. The translators are then tasked with defending their choices to the poet – and the audience.

The Price of Desire- New Film Added to Spring 2017 CALA Film Series

Join us on Friday, May 12th at 6pm for a special screening of The Price of Desire, a film about the Irish architect, furniture designer, and pioneer of the Modern Movement,  Eileen Gray. The film tells the “controversial story of how Eileen Gray’s influential contribution to 20th century architecture and design was almost entirely wiped from history by the egotistical ‘Father of Modernism’ Le Corbusier, and of how her relationship with philanderer Jean Badovici (Le Corbusier’s promoter by way of his influential architectural publication L’Architecture Vivante) further fuelled the rift between the two architects, both personally and professionally, consigning her legacy to a century of neglect and long-overdue recognition.” The film was written and directed by Mary McGuckian  and stars Orla Brady, Vincent Perez, Francesco Scinanna, and Alanis Morissette. The screening will be moderated by Victoria Shaw-Williamson, an appraiser specializing in fine and decorative arts and a specialist at 1stdibs, a leading online marketplace for design, art, and collectibles.

NYUSPS Literary Reading @KGB Bar – Submissions Due March 22

We are pleased to announce that NYUSPS again will be hosting a literary reading at KGB Bar in the East Village on Friday, April 7th from 7:00 to 9:00pm. This is an opportunity for students enrolled in spring classes to read their work in front of an audience.

Because time is limited and we have so many fantastic writers, students who wish to read at the event must submit a writing sample. Please submit the piece you would plan to read at KGB bar. We ask that submission be 4-5 pages in length. Submissions can be fiction or non-fiction, memoir or genre fiction, prose poems or sestinas—we only ask that you keep submissions to 4-5 pages total. Please send your submission to susan.caplan@nyu.edu no later than Wednesday, March  22nd.

Students chosen to read at the event will be required to attend a meeting during the week of the reading to rehearse and discuss logistics.

Join Professor Ben-Meir in conversation with His Excellency Bernardito C. Auza on the role religion is playing in conflicts in the Middle East, as well as the impact of the refugee crisis on the region and in Europe. How is the Vatican and Pope Francis addressing these crises, and how might the Holy See use its diplomatic outreach to serve as a key interlocutor in global conflict resolution?

His Excellency Bernardito C. Auza was born in Talibon, Republic of the Philippines on 10 June 1959. He became an ordained priest for the Diocese of Tagbilaran on 29 June 1985; in 1986 he was incardinated to the newly created Diocese of Talibon. After earning a doctorate in Theology, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1990 and served at the Apostolic Nunciature in Madagascar, in Bulgaria, and then in Albania. He then served in the Secretariat of State in the Vatican and from there was appointed to the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York. He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti on 8 May 2008 and was ordained Titular Archbishop of Suacia on 3 July 2008. On 1 July 2014, he was appointed Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York, and as Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Organization of American States on 16 July 2014.

Spring Foreign Film Series Opening Night This Friday

Join us for a great movie with a wonderful moderator, Michael Zam, in a beautiful location. There will be a small reception after the film.

Icíar Bollaín

Flores de Otro Mundo (Flowers from Another World) is a 1999 Spanish film, written and directed by Icíar Bollaín and starring José Sancho, Luis Tosar, and Lisete Mejía. The plot follows three women who travel to a village in rural Spain looking for love and to start a new life. Very well received, the film won the International Critics’ Week Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival. All screenings are free – all you have to do is RSVP to secure a spot.
