CALA adjunct professor Lourdes Olvera-Marshall honored by Crain’s 2020 New York Business

Congratulations to CALA adjunct professor Lourdes Olvera-Marshall on being named one of Crain’s New York Business 2020 Notable Women in Talent Resources! 

Lourdes is Global Manager of Diversity & Inclusion at the law firm Fried Frank, where she has launched diversity initiatives globally. She has increased diversity rankings by five points nationally and improved LGBTQ representation from below average to national average. Here at NYU, Lourdes teaches courses on networking, diversity and inclusion, and how to gain workplace influence. She speaks regularly on these topics to diverse associations, universities, and large institutions, including the U.S. Senate staff members at Capitol Hill. She is an attorney in both Mexico and New York, an Executive Coach (graduate from NYU SPS), and the president of MexPro, a Mexican professional association linked with the Mexican Consulate. She also holds a culinary Cordon D’Or degree and previously worked as a Cultural Representative at Walt Disney World, Epcot Center.

This summer, Lourdes will be teaching Virtual Networking: Fostering Professional Resources in a Virtual World. The two-session class is ideal for recent graduates or established professionals seeking to cultivate a professional network or explore new career options. Class begins on June 2!

Dr. Kristine Rodriguez Kerr receives 2020 Teaching Excellence Award

Congratulations to Dr. Kristine Rodriguez Kerr, Academic Director & Clinical Assistant Professor of the MS in Professional Writing (MSPW) program, for receiving the 2020 Teaching Excellence Award. This is an NYUSPS school-wide award that recognizes faculty members for their exceptional dedication to student engagement and innovative pedagogy.


In a virtual award ceremony on Monday evening, Kristine was described by colleagues as a “dedicated, multifaceted, and generous leader” and an “inspirational advocate for students and online learning.” Teaching Excellence Awardees are faculty who challenge, inspire, and support students with an unwavering commitment to educating the industry practitioners and leaders of tomorrow. Fully online since 2013, the MSPW program offers an applied, workshop-model curriculum that prepares students to craft strategic copy and shape important stories for target audiences across industries.

Congratulations to Jenny McPhee, 2020 Guggenheim Fellow!

Presenting one of the 2020 Guggenheim Fellowship Winners: Jenny McPhee, Director of the Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) and Clinical Assistant Professor of Translation and Creative Writing. Jenny oversees noncredit programming, including certificate programs, here at CALA. She will be working on a new translation of the Italian author Elsa Morante’s first novel, Menzogna e Sortilegio (1948).

Three New York University professors have been awarded 2020 Guggenheim Fellowships, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has announced. This year’s 175 recipients were chosen from nearly 3,000 applicants in the United States and Canada.

“It’s exceptionally encouraging to be able to share such positive news at this terribly challenging time,” said Edward Hirsch, president of the foundation. “A Guggenheim Fellowship has always offered practical assistance, helping Fellows do their work, but for many of the new Fellows, it may be a lifeline at a time of hardship, a survival tool as well as a creative one. As we grapple with the difficulties of the moment, it is also important to look to the future. The artists, writers, scholars, and scientific researchers supported by the Fellowship will help us understand and learn from what we are enduring individually and collectively, and it is an honor for the Foundation to help them do their essential work.”

This year’s NYU Guggenheim Fellows are:

·      Jenny McPhee, academic director of the Center for Applied Liberal Arts at the School of Professional Studies and clinical assistant professor of Translation and Creative Writing, has penned the novels The Center of Things (Doubleday, 2001), No Ordinary Matter (Free Press, 2009), and A Man of No Moon (Counterpoint, 2009), and co-authored Girls: Ordinary Girls and Their Extraordinary Pursuits (Random House, 2000), a collection of life stories by McPhee and her sisters Laura and Martha. Her translations from Italian include books by Natalia Ginzburg, Primo Levi, and Pope John Paul II.

·      Kim Phillips-Fein, a professor in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, has authored Invisible Hands: The Businessmen’s Crusade Against the New Deal (W.W. Norton, 2010) and Fear City: New York’s Fiscal Crisis and the Rise of Austerity Politics (Metropolitan Books, 2017). Phillips-Fein, whose research focuses on 20th century American political, economic, and labor history, also holds an appointment in NYU’s Department of History.

·      Melissa Schwartzberg, a Silver Professor in the Wilf Family Department of Politics, has authored Democracy and Legal Change (Cambridge, 2007) and Counting the Many: The Origins and Limits of Supermajority Rule (Cambridge, 2014). Schwartzberg, the editor of NOMOS, the annual volume of the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy, also holds appointments in NYU’s Department of Classics and at NYU’s School of Law.

Register for CALA’s Spring 2020 After Effects II Course, Starting Tuesday!

CALA’s After Effects Level 2 course, with instructor Kalika Kharkar Sharma, is a great way to step up your motion design skills in a dramatic way and create material for your video demo reel, web portfolio or social media feed. Intended for students with basic to intermediate skills in Adobe After Effects, we begin by exploring creative transitions between video or animated scenes using the Effects that the software is famous for. Then we move on to creating a short shape-morph or explainer animation, starting the process with storyboards, working on overall timing/editing with keyframes and the Graph Editors and ending with a completed video with music, sound effects and/or voiceover. Finally, we create a text animation/lyric video, where we dive into 3D layers and innovative ways of having text appear onscreen to spoken word or song lyrics. Professor Andrew Dicus of the Storytelling Lab Authors Article on the History of Revolutionary Rhetoric

An odd feature of protest and revolutionary discourses is that they seem constantly to reference their own obviousness. “We hold these truths to be self-evident.” “This is what democracy looks like.” But if they are indeed “self-evident,” why do such “truths” require revolutions and wide-scale social movements to take hold? Why must they be “declared” in the first place?

The CALA Storytelling Lab’s Andrew Dicus, Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor and coordinator of writing and communications courses at NYU SPS, addresses these issues in his article, “Terror and Self-Evidence: Robespierre and the General Will,” published in the current issue of European Romantic Review.

    

Conducting research that spans early-modern political philosophy, twentieth-century analytic philosophy, British literature, and revolutionary rhetoric in eighteenth-century France, Andrew argues that protest discourses of today have retained critical aspects that modernized political consciousness in the late-eighteenth-century (a revolutionary period for America, France, Haiti, and beyond), but that crucial changes in how they conceptualize “self-evidence” have allowed for expanded, and more robust, bottom-up agency.

In addition to coordinating CALA’s Storytelling Lab and writing courses, Andrew teaches various humanities classes in NYU SPS’s Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies. 

Kate Walter Continues Writing Her Novel During the Pandemic

“It’s hard to believe that only two weeks ago I gave a reading with three other writers in the community room. About 50 people were in attendance and later we talked about the work and drank champagne. I read the first chapter of a novel in progress and everyone told me they wanted to know what would happen next. The feedback was super-encouraging. Just what I needed. It was the kind of interaction that makes Westbeth a great place for artists to live.”

PEN America Translation Prize, Judged by MS in Translation Faculty Members Elizabeth Lowe and Jenny McPhee, Awarded to Allison Markin Powell

On the evening of March 2, the 2020 PEN America Literary Awards were announced at a Radio City Music Hall ceremony hosted by Seth Myers. PEN is an international non-profit committed to fostering and perpetuating the ideal of freedom of expression. This year, two members of the CALA MS in Translation (MST) faculty, Elizabeth Lowe and Jenny McPhee, participated in judging the Translation Prize for a book-length work of prose published in 2019. The award went to The Ten Loves of Nishino by Hiromi Kawakami, translated from the Japanese by Allison Markin Powell.    

In a joint reflection, Lowe and McPhee shed light on their experience as judges of this prestigious competition.“We were given a total of about 192 books in translation from all over the world to review among the six-person jury,” Lowe and McPhee explained. “The first challenge was to decide on a process, since we had a short timeline to come up with first a longlist of ten books, then a shortlist of five and finally, a nomination for the winner.” The judges communicated regularly via Zoom and a Google doc, comparing impressions of the submissions as they read. They were pleasantly surprised to find how easily this simple process yielded consensus. 

While the judging process went smoothly, it also raised interesting questions about the contemporary field of translation. Lowe and McPhee discussed “the importance of translation prizes in bringing greater exposure to translation and translators, the ethical responsibility of judges, and the question of whether there is a contemporary aesthetics of translation” with their fellow judges. “We noticed we were all drawn to translations which preserved something of the original language and culture.” 

Overall, both Lowe and McPhee found the judging process to be intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding. “It was a great experience that allowed us to share the importance of translation with the world,” they said, “and also to get to know colleagues who are deeply committed to the field.”
