Writing Instructor Carol Bergman Publishes Part One of Trilogy on Colonial America

NYU SPS writing instructor Carol Bergman recently published a short story–part one of her upcoming trilogy on colonial America–in The Copperfield Review. The work of historical fiction, titled “Shunned,” takes readers to Plymouth colony and tells the story of an orphan while exploring the tensions between love and religion, progress and punishment, and colonization and theft. 
 
Previously a journalist in the U.S. and U.K., Bergman’s work has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, The Times London, The Daily News Magazine, Newsday, Woman’s World, Cosmopolitan and Salon.
 
At CALA, she teaches narrative nonfiction writing — her classes are open to writers of all levels. This Spring, Bergman will be instructing “Creative Nonfiction Writing,” for those looking to explore the genre with short essays, memoirs, and profiles.

Roberta Seret Publishes New Book – First in a Trilogy

Congratulations to Dr. Roberta Seret on publishing The Gift of Diamonds, the first book in her Transylvanian trilogy! 
 
Here at CALA, Seret will be teaching ‘Global Hotspots Through Foreign Film: Stay-at-Home Edition’ this Spring. She has nurtured an environment of open-mindedness and intellectual curiosity in her classes at NYU — we recommend you don’t miss this opportunity.

In addition to teaching, Seret is Director of Advanced English and Film for the Hospitality Committee at the United Nations and Founder of ‘International Cinema Education,’ an NGO at the UN. This isn’t Seret’s first book either; she has also authored World Affairs in Foreign Films, a textbook teaching global issues through foreign film. 

CALA Faculty Elected Co-Presidents for Hollywood Radio and Television Society

Congratulations to CALA faculty, Frederic Richter and Simon TaufiQue, who have been elected to serve as the New York co-presidents of the Hollywood Radio and Television Society (HRTS). 
 
HRTS is the industry’s premier information and networking forum, run by “entertainment’s most distinguished leaders.” Founded in 1947, HRTS aims to build careers by providing members with an inside view of the media world and foster a community while doing so.
 
At NYU SPS, Richter teaches in the Certificate in Television and Screenwriting. Spring 2021, he will be instructing ‘American Gothic: Films of the Midwest’ and ‘Reaching for Representation: Agents, Managers, and Lawyers for Film and TV Writers.’ When he’s not teaching, Richter stays busy as the Director of Development for LA-based production company, Tradition Pictures, and working as a screenwriter and story analyst.
 
TaufiQue, too, is an instructor at NYU CALA, teaching in the Certificate in TV and Film Producing. He has produced a number of award-winning films with companies such as Lionsgate, Universal and Amazon. TaufiQue is also a film-composer and programming consultant for Oscar-qualifying festivals. His Spring class ‘Film and TV Development as a Producer’ is ideal for those interested in the industry.

CALA Writing Instructor Estelle Erasmus for The New York Times: “Singing My Dad Back to Me”

Estelle Erasmus, journalist and CALA instructor, recently published an article in The New York Times, “Singing My Dad Back to Me.” 
 
A beautiful narrative of Erasmus and her father — who lost much of his memory to Alzheimer’s disease — she recalls the childhood opera lessons that fed both, her love for music and an immeasurable bond with Dad.  Now, as the Covid-19 pandemic keeps her from visiting her father, Erasmus’ fear of him forgetting her is overcome every time she sings Dad’s favorite songs to him over the phone. “He remembers my voice,” Erasmus writes. “Not my speaking voice — my singing voice.” From tunes such as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” to “Summertime” from the show Porgy and Bess, Erasmus shares how music enkindles her father’s memory and, for that singular point in time, allows them to feel together again. “For a moment we share the same space in our minds, though it’s only as temporary as the memory occupying his,” Erasmus writes.

Preserving New York’s Historic Neighborhoods: Janta House, Queens

CALA faculty member, Kelly Carroll, spent her summer conducting outreach for national support to save the home of Aleksander and Walentyna Janta, two Polish war heroes. Walentyna translated Jan Karski’s reports of the holocaust for the Allies and was present at some of the Nuremberg trials. If the home is not protected by landmark status the plan is to demolish it for an apartment building.

The Queens Eagle recently covered this initiative and interviewed Carroll: “This house was known as the nucleus of the Polish emige elite and the couple hosted esteemed Polish authors such as Czesław Miłosz, Jerzy Giedroyc, and Marek Hłasko. Jan Karski also paid visits to this home,” wrote Kelly Carroll, the director of advocacy and community outreach at HDC, in a letter of support.

Carroll pointed out that the home, built alongside four other similar houses in 1911, has only one recorded alteration in its 109-year history.

“The house’s value as a physical touchstone to the story of these people’s lives far outweighs its negligible alterations,” Carroll wrote. “We urge you to designate this home of these heroes so that their stories will not soon be extinguished.” Read full article from QueensEagle

CALA Fall Faculty Spotlight: Kalika Kharkar Sharma (After Effects I and After Effects II)

Kalika Sharma
Kalika Kharkar Sharma brings years of industry experience and high-level teaching to her courses at NYU-SPS/CALA. An NYU-Alumna herself, she also studied Film and Animation at Rhode Island School of Design. Her clients include Brooks Brothers, Carnegie Hall, United Way of NYC, CNBC, Nickelodeon, Sesame Street, iHeartRadio and Steve Madden, among others. In addition, she’s been teaching motion design, character animation and traditional and experimental filmmaking since 2005. Within NYU, Kalika also teaches at Tisch School of the Arts and SPS-Department of Applied Undergraduate studies; at Pratt Institute she developed a Cinematic Typography course for their Film-Video department, has been a guest lecturer at CUNY, and teaches industry professionals motion graphics best practices. Past students now hold lead creative positions at Samsung, Kayak-OpenTable, NASA, Microsoft and Comedy Central, where 3 won Emmy Awards for Motion Design.  
 
This Fall, Kalika is teaching After Effects I and After Effects II at CALA. MS in Translation & Interpreting Faculty Member Barbara Inge Karsch Publishes ATA Chronicle Article on the Formation of New Terminology by Translators

In a recent article for the American Translators Association’s ATA Chronicle, “Creating New Terminology: Do Translators Really Do This?,” MS in Translation & Interpreting (MSTI) instructor Barbara Inge Karsch identifies situations in which translators might develop terminology to represent new concepts. Karsch, who teaches Theory & Practice of Terminology and Terminology Management, is one of the language experts convened by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to create standards and frameworks to anchor the process of term formation. 

“One of the primary goals of technical material is to pass on information to a user. A large component of technical texts are terms and names (designations). Indeed, terms and names are the main carriers of information, as they’re the representations of concepts covered by the text.

If we invent terms and names randomly, chances are nobody will understand the concepts behind them. Communication will be inhibited or not occur. If we form terminology with a systematic approach, a larger percentage of readers will grasp the concept, and grasp it faster. […]

Companies that are serious about their linguistic presentation and professional image put work into naming their products, features, departments, job titles, and most of all the company itself. As their extended representatives, translators must put equal care into the coining of new terms and names. ISO 704 provides us with seven term formation principles to guide us in this endeavor.”
