Upcoming Event—Authoring Advocacy: Bearing Witness in an Era of Mass Incarceration

What is the responsibility of writers to confront our era of mass incarceration, and how do we bear witness without assuming voyeuristic or exploitative perspectives? Join PEN America for a reading featuring 2018 PEN America Writing For Justice Fellows Justin Rovillos Monson and Reginald Dwayne Betts, and Asian American Writers’ Workshop’s The Witness Program writers Roshan Abraham, Christina Olivares, & Sarah Wang. A closing conversation will explore the ethics, challenges and necessity of writing about mass incarceration from a variety of perspectives and lived experiences.

As part of the Brooklyn Book Festival 2019, one of America’s premier book festivals and the largest free literary event in New York City, Deutsches Haus at NYU presents together with the PEN Translation Committee, and PEN America’s Children’s and Young Adult Books Committee the panel discussion Translating Visual Stories: Graphic Novels, Comics, Picture Books, and Illustrated YA with Kristi Fernandez, Lyn Miller-Lachmann, CJ Suzuki, Lucas Zwirner, and CALA’s MS in Translation instructor, Sandra Smith.

Stories that combine text and illustration are growing in popularity. Some of the most interesting and innovative work is coming from outside the US and translated into English. Panelists will talk about translating graphic novels, comics, picture books, and illustrated YA books and how both text and visuals change when adapted to a new language and culture. We’ll focus on Japan, a pioneer of comics and graphic novels, Western Europe, where edgy stories dominate and refugees give voice to a more diverse continent, Germany, and the attempt to re-frame a beloved YA classic for a U.S. audience, and Brazil, with its unique picture book illustrations.

Stories from Italy with Jhumpa Lahiri

Stories from Italy is brought to you by The Center for Fiction, this coming Friday, September 13, at 7 pm.

The Penguin Book of Italian Short Stories is described by editor Jhumpa Lahiri as a “fragmented self-portrait” (Financial Times). The forty stories were carefully selected by Lahiri, who spent three years in Italy, an experience that has greatly influenced her work. 

Lahiri will join the anthology’s translators, Ann Goldstein, Jenny McPhee (Director, CALA), and Michael F. Moore for a discussion on translating from the Italian and the region’s literary trends.

Congratulations to CALA photography faculty, Kay Kenny, who has a new solo photography exhibition, “The Stone Goddesses” at Casa Colombo in Jersey City. The show opened this past Tuesday and is running until September 26, 2019. The show features Kenny’s new photomontages.

CALA Staff Member Anne Maguire Discusses Barbara Hammer’s History Lessons at Whitney Museum Screening

This past week, CALA staff member Anne Maguire was a featured panelist at the Whitney Museum’s screening and discussion of Barbara Hammer’s History Lessons. In the film, which was originally released in 2000, Barbara Hammer reclaims and rewrites lesbian history through her playful but empowering manipulation of a vast array of archival footage, drawn from popular films, newsreels, sex ed pics, stag reels, medical and educational films, old nudies, and more.  Anne played a central role in the creation of the film as its archival researcher; the clips she collected throughout her time working at the Prelinger Archive make up a majority of the images seen in the film. Anne was also used as what she calls the “ghostly archivist” who is referenced throughout the film.

The screening was followed up by a panel discussion featuring Anne as well as three of the film’s actors: Carmelita Tropicana, Mo B. Dick, and Jane Fine. The conversation was moderated by Matt Wolf, one of the guest curators for the 2019 Whitney Biennial film program.

CALA Supports Competitive TV Writing Fellowship Focused on Diversity

The Writers Guild of America East, along with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, and the New York City Department of Small Business Services announced their second Made in NY Writers Room. We are excited that CALA is a referring organization for the six-month television writing fellowship, designed specifically to support underrepresented writers who live in New York City.

CALA’s Andrew Dicus, Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor of Applied Writing, noted, “Lack of diversity is an ongoing, industry-wide problem for TV and film production, and it’s great to see that we have been able to find ways to play a small role in addressing it. NYU SPS is not only a destination for stellar professional and non-credit instruction, but also a valuable industry partner, committed to supporting faculty and students who see and want to address these kinds of systemic problems.”

Painting With Flashlights – Harvard Magazine

She’s taken hundreds of such nighttime images, also venturing into the pitch-black fields, woods, and farmlands of New England and upstate New York, where she lives. “There was nothing there, no car headlights, no street or house lights, to interfere with what I wanted to have lit—and the vast and wonderful sky,” she says. “It is a poetic tribute to wild imaginings: the nightmares and dreams inherent in the lonely darkened corners of the world.”

“Into the Night In the Middle of Nowhere,” at the Griffin Museum of Photography, in Winchester, Massachusetts, features a selection of these works. Kenny, who is also a painter and long-time art teacher at New York University, will be at the July 18 opening-night reception to discuss her ideas and techniques. Early on, she often captured images of farm animals. “Sheep are a wonderful metaphor for nighttime, and they don’t move, they just stand there and munch,” she says. “And they’re white, so they show up well.”

50 Years After Stonewall ….

Don’t assume a gay or lesbian person knows every other queer.

“My cousin, Jeff, told me that when a co-worker heard he is gay, she asked whether he knew her sister’s friend, Steve, a gay man in Chicago. Jeff, who lives in New Jersey, snapped: “Sure, Steve from Chicago. I met him at one of our gay conventions.”

Don’t tell people it is brave to be out.

“A married colleague, who identifies as a queer femme, hates it when people tell her it’s ‘brave’ for her to be out, as if she had a choice. Do we choose to be short or tall?”
