Emerging Photographers Featured at Soho Photo Gallery

Last night, students in Lawrence Wheatman’s course Photography: From Beginner to Exhibitor exhibited their work in a special one-night-only floor show at the Soho Photo Gallery in downtown NYC. From travelogues  and reflections on the selfie to colorful still lifes, these burgeoning artists used specialized photographic techniques and their unique creative impulse to express how they experience the world. Below are a few of many highlights from the show. 
 
Yoshihisa Padilla
Yoshihisa is an actress, playwright, and artist from Mexico currently living and learning in New York City. Her desire to pursue photography comes from her love of art “in every shape and form.” She uses photography to capture her reality and distortions of it. As she describes, “I can share with the world what I want them to see about me.”
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Steven Branda
Steven writes “My style is intuitive. Living in one of the world’s busiest cities, I focus on enhancing my ability to see, rather than just look. For me, art has always been, and always will be, a passion. There are beautiful moments to capture each day.” For this show, Steven brought images taken in Thailand, including the famous “Monkey Town” of Lopburi, where monkeys roam freely and are considered sacred. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Joshua Gat
Joshua’s work  reflects his experiences at home and abroad, from Peru and the Galapagos to Norway and his native New York City. “Photography for me, is the art of capturing a moment in time,” he writes. Joshua experiments with digital apps to re-interpret his photographic compositions, sometimes making photos look like dreamy watercolor paintings.

The American Translators Association has approved 5 CE credits for each day of attendance at this year’s Event:

  • 5 CE credits: 7th Annual Translation Studies Research Symposium on Complexity and Translation: Friday, October 20, 2017 10:00AM-3:30PM
  • 5 CE credits: 2nd Annual Translation Day Symposium on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM

Lights, Camera, Deco! This Fall Join CALA in Celebrating Art Deco’s Influence on International Cinema

Please join NYU SPS’s Center for Applied Liberal Arts  this Fall in celebrating Art Deco’s impact on cinema around the world.  The Art Deco style arguably originated at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris in 1925, where it left a mark on many designers including Cedric Gibbons,art director for the film Grand Hotel. The Art Deco style would appear in over 1500 films—from Metropolis to The Artist—across the following decades. Art Deco was a truly international style, influencing architecture, fashion, and the design of all objects from perfume bottles to cars. Art Deco moved away from the floral, ornamental patterns of the past to the streamlined, modern shapes of the future. At the same time it embraced and exoticized design motifs from Asia, South America, Egypt, and Africa. Art Deco’s clean and geometric lines complemented the black and white movies of the era and created enduring iconic cinematic images.*
