Jennifer Egan Discussed Her Novel Manhattan Beach at NYUSPS One Book, One New York Event

Last night, the NYU School of Professional Studies capped off a series of events in celebration of the One Book, One New York initiative with a discussion between Jennifer Egan, author of the bestselling novel Manhattan Beach, and CALA Writing instructor Elizabeth Tippens. Throughout the lively exchange and audience Q&A, Egan discussed her research on the Brooklyn Navy Yard which served as the inspiration behind Manhattan Beach, her creative process, pushing past writer’s block, and much more. She even revealed that the first draft of the book was 1,400 handwritten pages long—a testament to the importance of editing despite the grief that often comes with making cuts and changes.

As part of our ongoing celebration of the One Book, One New York initiative, NYU’s School of Professional Studies is delighted to present Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award winner of Manhattan Beach, A Visit from the Goon Squad, and The Keep, in conversation with Elizabeth Tippens, author of Winging It and instructor at NYUSPS.

Members of the audience will get the chance to ask questions of their own, so join us to learn more about Jennifer Egan’s novel, Manhattan Beach, and to get some expert perspective on the rewards and challenges of a life of writing.

In honor of Jennifer Egan’s Manhattan Beach being selected for the 2018 One Book One New York initiative, NYUSPS will be hosting a series of events to kick off the conversation – and to keep it going all summer long.

On Tuesday, June 19th, Join Julia Strayer, author and writing instructor in NYU’s School of Professional Studies, for a free writing workshop, where you will try your hand at writing flash fiction—condensed, pithy stories that move or amuse readers in about 1,000 words or less. Learn what flash fiction is, see how it works, read and discuss some examples, and then write your own. (You do not need to read the book before participating in the workshop.) The workshop is free and open to the public. We will meet in the 5thfloor lounge of 7 East 12th Street, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, on Tuesday, June 19. One Book One New York Winner Announced

Jennifer Egan’s Manhattan Beach is the 2018 One Book One New York winner. From the Mayor’s office of Media and Entertainment:

“We are so pleased to announce this year’s One Book, One New York winner, and thrilled at the level of enthusiasm and participation in this year’s program,” said Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin. “Manhattan Beach is steeped in New York history and is a deep dive into the city’s waterfront neighborhoods. Because it features such a strong and compelling female protagonist who defies the gender stereotypes of her day it feels especially timely today.”

Manhattan Beach is the fifth novel–and first work of historical fiction–written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jennifer Egan, a Brooklyn resident. Winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, the book was also long-listed for the 2017 National Book Award and selected as a top book of 2017 by publications including The New York Times, Washington Post, and Time. Manhattan Beach tells the haunting World War II-era story of Anna Kerrigan, who becomes the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s first female diver, and her search for her missing father. …

For the second consecutive year, the NYU School of Professional Studies Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies (DAUS) will be participating in One Book, One New York. This year, it also will be joined by the School’s Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA). Both units will host a number of initiatives in which students can read and discuss Manhattan Beach by the end of the semester. They will launch a virtual book club via Twitter, moderating discussions about the book, its themes, and connection to New York City. In addition, they will have a faculty led discussion on topics related to the book.

“Manhattan Beach is a terrific choice! There’s something for every reader—a strong female protagonist, depictions of Brooklyn of long ago, and the influence of the water, which can soothe and threaten, inspire and mystify,” noted Billie Gastic, associate dean of the NYUSPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies.”

CALA Director Jenny McPhee will participate in a translation panel tomorrow at 2pm at the Goethe Institute as part of the Festival Neue Literatur.

This year’s translation event, entitled “Inside Translation | Outside Ourselves: Connecting Our Worlds,” pays homage to works in translation that have enlarged our lives and countered literary, political, and cultural isolationism.

Women, Creativity & Craft: Write, Pitch and Publish at this year’s Spring Big Apple conference

On April 15th 2018, the International Women’s Writing Guild will host its annual “Spring Big Apple” conveniently located at the historic Poets House. The all-day Sunday event encompasses three hands-on workshops (facilitated by Yun Wei, Paula Chaffee Scardamalia and Cathleen O’Connor) pivoted around how to write, pitch and publish your work. The conference also includes a catered lunch, a session for attendees to meet literary agents, and a New Authors panel on pathways to publication. The day will close with IWWG’s signature “All Voices Open Mic”- in which all attendees will have the chance to share their writing.

The International Women’s Writing Guild was founded in 1976 to provide a space for all women writers to feel welcomed, inspired and empowered by skills, resources, and mentoring. 

Today, members of the Guild have published over thousands of books, and the organization provides one of the longest running literary conferences in the country. Through the Guild, countless writers have gained publishing resources, received one-of-a-kind writing guidance, forged new friendships, found greater self-expression and developed their craft.

While the non-members fee is $185 for this exceptional literary day, the rate for students has been reduced to $45. There is also a new member special, where for $195 attendees will receive access to the event along with membership to the Guild for the whole year. 

The conference, this year entitled “Women, Creativity & Craft: Write, Pitch, Publish” is not only a chance to advance one’s writing and publishing opportunities, but also to learn firsthand more about the Guild’s role as a vital support system for women writers around the world.

CALA Film Series Screening on Monday, March 12th: Krigen

Seats are still available for the second film in our Spring 2018 series, Tobias Lindholm’s Krigen (“A War“), which tells the story of a Danish commander who is accused of committing a war crime while leading his company on a mission in Afghanistan. The screening will be held at Scandinavia House (58 Park Ave, NYC) at 6pm, with an introduction by CALA’s Danish language instructor, Dorte Tulet.
