Barbara Inge Karsch, an instructor in the M.S. in Translation (MST) program at CALA, has been awarded a Dean’s Faculty Teaching and Learning Innovation Scholar Grant. Her project focuses on establishing measures of terminology entries that are driven by the practical needs of a translator. MST students currently receive a foundation in terminology management, including classification, research, and the documentation of their findings in a terminology management system (TMS). Yet, there is very little documentation on measuring both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of entries in a TMS. Establishing a framework to measure these entries will equip translation students with a skillset that will benefit their clients in the public and private sectors.
Representing CALA among the Innovation Scholar grantees for this academic year, Professor Karsch will partner with the Center for Academic Excellence and Support (CAES) to prepare, complete, and present her research. Projects were evaluated based on their potential “to create inventive curricular and teaching design initiatives that challenge conventional classroom boundaries and engage students in rich and meaningful learning experiences.” Professor Karsch intends to implement her research to refine the learning objectives of her core MST course, Theory & Practice of Terminology, and to better prepare students for the workplace.

SPS faculty member Anne Marie Goetz was recently featured in the launch of In Her Words: She Resists, an NYT newsletter series examining the pivotal historical role of women in resistance movements. Women have often formed the tactical and intellectual core of these movements, in which femininity has been strategically deployed, in Goetz’s words, as “a force that will dampen or discourage any violence.” Successful power realignments driven by female activism nonetheless rarely result in leadership roles for the women involved. The NYT series will examine these dynamics and their evolution in the era of social media through a series of in-depth profiles from across the globe.

When seeking a summer internship, MS in Professional Writing (MSPW) student Rachel Hirschhaut wanted something that provided practical experience and a sense of fulfillment. She found both in a position at Pawlicy Advisor, a startup company that connects pet owners with affordable pet insurance plans. This month, Pawlicy Advisor announced investments totaling $1M.
As the summer Content Marketing Associate, Rachel wrote copy, designed content, and developed communication strategies to promote the services of the company. Rachel helped to shape and publicize the company’s brand, attracting attention from customers, investors, and industry publications.
“I interviewed with Pawlicy while taking the MSPW’s Principles of Information Architecture core course,” Rachel explains, “which sparked their interest because they also needed help with web design.” During her internship, she helped to boost social media and web engagement through content development and SEO keyword research.
At Pawlicy Advisor, Rachel was able to promote a company with a positive mission while getting a taste of startup culture, all before her final semester in the MSPW this spring.
In a piece recently published by the Wasserman Career for Career Development, MS in Professional Writing (MSPW) student Vaia Trittas describes her own journey towards achieving a work-life balance that includes graduate coursework. Trittas, who works full-time as a Program Administrator at NYU, identifies time management, organizational skills, and empathy as key to juggling multiple priorities. Trittas also notes that support structures within the program were essential to welcoming her back to student life. Trittas writes: “The NYU School of Professional Studies (SPS) grants working professionals – like myself – the flexibility to absorb a full course load at our own pace. In Australia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, newspapers were the main source of fiction, local and imported. Fast forward to the 21st century, and the National Library of Australia’s Trove database hosts the largest open-access, mass-digitized collection of historical newspapers internationally. This fortunate confluence of technological systems (newspapers and mass-digitization) made possible the discovery of a transnational collection of over 21,000 publications of novels, novellas and short stories in early Australian newspapers. With reference to this massively expanded record of fiction in Australia and Australian fiction, this paper poses some key questions for literary and reading history in the mass-digitised age. Is bigger always better in computational literary studies? What new data-rich methods are useful for literary and reading history? And what happens to all this data when our projects finish?
Katherine Bode is Professor of literary and textual studies at the Australian National University and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow (2018-2022). She is the author of A World of Fiction: Digital Collections and the Future of Literary History (2018) and Reading by Numbers: Recalibrating the Literary Field (2012).
Congratulations to Elizabeth Lowe, an adjunct faculty member in the M.S. in Translation program, who recently received a Literature Translation Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Lowe’s award will support her translation of the short story collection Her Husband’s Shirt and the novella The House of Passion by Nélida Piñon. Piñon is a celebrated Brazilian author and was the first woman to serve as president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Written in Brazilian Portuguese, the works that Dr. Lowe has selected have never before appeared in English.

Lowe is a writer, a translator, and a teacher. She is the author of The City in Brazilian Literature (1982),Translation and the Rise of Inter-American Literature (2007), and many scholarly articles and reviews. Lowe’s work has taken her around the world. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Colombia and a visiting professor at universities in China, Austria, France, Sweden, Argentina, Chile, and Brazil. She is the founding director of the Center for Translation Studies at the University of Illinois and a translation editor for the Kenyon Review. She sits on the editorial boards of Review: Literature and Arts of the Americas, Cadernos de Tradução, and Delos and is a member of the PEN Translation Committee. Dr. Lowe has taught courses in Contrastive Stylistics, Translation for New Media, and The Language Profession for the M.S. in Translation and received the 2018 NYUSPS Teaching Excellence Award
