CALA instructor Lori Fischer’s Play Petie to Open Next Week + More News

Writing instructor Lori Fischer has been hard at work writing, revising, and premiering a variety of projects over the last year. Lori recently sent this update, including information on the premiere of her new play Petite and her upcoming NYUSPS courses:

It’s been quite the year since I last taught Writing Great Characters and Getting into the Writing Habit online at NYU. Since last fall, my musical The Sparkley Clean Funeral Singers was published by Samuel French; my feature film Chasing Taste is now available on Amazon; my comedy Greener Pastures received its first MainStage production; I had a ten-minute play in a festival in DC; and this fall my drama Petie is being produced by www.theatreeast.org in NYC!

How did all of this happen? First I got into the writing habit, and then I wrote and re-wrote my characters until each one was literally jumping off the page. So, if you’re a writer trying to get started or trying to create compelling, unique characters, I’d love to help you do just that. “Salsa, Power, and Performance in New York City” and other events at the Museum of the City of New York

Join the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY) and leading scholars this weekend in examining and celebrating Salsa’s cultural and commercial influence on New York City and beyond. The event on Sunday, September 17th at 2pm will include a musical performance by  OLA FRESCA , reception, and viewing of MCNY’s exhibition Rhythm & Power: Salsa in New York  (on view through November 26th).  NYUSPS CALA students are eligible to buy tickets at the member price of $15.00. Kay Kenny will be featured in two upcoming photography exhibits in Jersey City and Saugerties, NY.

Lights, Camera, Deco! This Fall Join CALA in Celebrating Art Deco’s Influence on International Cinema

Please join NYU SPS’s Center for Applied Liberal Arts  this Fall in celebrating Art Deco’s impact on cinema around the world.  The Art Deco style arguably originated at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris in 1925, where it left a mark on many designers including Cedric Gibbons,art director for the film Grand Hotel. The Art Deco style would appear in over 1500 films—from Metropolis to The Artist—across the following decades. Art Deco was a truly international style, influencing architecture, fashion, and the design of all objects from perfume bottles to cars. Art Deco moved away from the floral, ornamental patterns of the past to the streamlined, modern shapes of the future. At the same time it embraced and exoticized design motifs from Asia, South America, Egypt, and Africa. Art Deco’s clean and geometric lines complemented the black and white movies of the era and created enduring iconic cinematic images.*

NYC’s First Cultural Plan Announced by Mayor De Blasio, Cites Need for Diversity and Inclusion

Last week, Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled New York City’s first ever “cultural plan” which among other actions proposes to link future funding to museums and arts organization to diversity of employees and board members. A recent report found that 67 percent of NYC residents identify themselves as minorities, yet only 38 percent of employees at cultural organizations are in those groups. The boards of NYC’s most renowned cultural institutions are made up of mostly white male executives from finance, real estate, and other industries. Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Tom Finkelstein noted that the “ announcement requiring diversity reporting from city-funded groups is the next step, building on everything we’ve learned to date to work toward a cultural sector that is fairer, more equitable and looks like the city it serves.”

The plan also calls for more inclusion of neglected neighborhoods across the 5 boroughs in the city’s cultural life by bringing the arts to more spaces and incentivizing New York’s imminent cultural organizations to attract and serve the residents of those neighborhoods.

Spring 2017 Highlights from Art Programs at CALA

This Spring semester, the Center for Applied Liberal Arts officially launched the Diploma in Global Art Business, a program which prepares students for careers in the arts by giving them specialized training in navigating the art market, understanding regulations and how art is valued, managing collections, and the intricacies of art transactions. For their final project, students presented on  an art collection of their own design, from conception through its acquisition, taking into consideration preservation and other long-term issues. Pictured at left are students Liu Di and Lu Xie with instructors Martha Blackwelder, Sabine Wilson, and Patrick Regan. 

In our non-credit student studio art program, students explored figure drawing, painting, photography, and using a variety of techniques and materials to create art. Pictured at left are students from Claire Rosenfeld’s Drawing and Painting with Mixed Media during a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

While students in Ben Copperwheat’s new course the Fashion Designer as an Artist looked at contemporary art and fashion collaborations, students in other art history courses explored Matisse, Picasso, Vienna at the turn of the century, and other significant artists and movements through lectures and visits to NYC landmarks such as the Museum of Modern Art, Neue Galerie, Cooper-Hewitt, and others.

Already downloaded more than 40 million times, S-Town tells the tale of the reclusive and eccentric John McLemore and his life in Woodstock, Alabama. There are a number of events taking place between today and Monday that will feature the work of faculty from the Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA). Continue reading to learn more! 

Friday, May 19th— The Brooklyn Historical Society opens its new museum and gift shop at the historic Empire Stores in DUMBO. Entrance during the opening weekend (May 20 + May 21) is free.  The inaugural exhibit Shifting Perspectives: Photographs of Brooklyn’s Waterfront features several works by award-winning photographer Lynn Saville. Saville is teaching Photographic NYC from Remarkable Locations this summer. 

Monday May 22nd, 8pm- At Christ & Stephen’s Church (120 W 69th) Composer Ed Cionek’s violin-piano work, Stolen Moments in Green and Blue will be performed by Claudia Schaer, violin and Max Lifchitz, piano, in a chamber music program for violin, cello and piano, along with works by Fueyo, Lifchitz, Rodriguez, and Tann. A production by North-South Consonance. Cionek is teaching Master Composers of the Romantic Era this summer. 

Monday May 22nd, 5pm– The New York Design Center at 200 Lexington Avenue will be hosting various events to mark the opening day of the High End Luxury Furniture Fair in NYC. This includes the “Fashion Show with Global Designers” at the Tucker Robins showroom featuring Zolaykha Sherzad’s collection Zarif Designs, produced in Kabul with the help of 52 local Afghan artisans. Sherzad was a panelist at NYU SPS’s recent event “Sustainability of Ethical Fashion in Our Brave New World.”  This summer, CALA is offering various courses in Fashion and Interior Design.

 

May 16th-June 3rd- “Or Curse the Darkness: Atlantic Gallery Responds to Our Moment” is a temporary exhibit featuring artist Meera Thompson. On June 1st, join the artists and several art historians and critics for a special panel discussion. Thompson is teaching the following courses this summer: Drawing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art  and Drawing Techniques for Art Specialists

Art Deco News and Events

As the 14th World Congress on Art Deco kicks off in Cleveland this week, we would like to congratulate Anthony Robins– historian, author, guide, SPS instructor, and all-around art deco expert- on receiving this year’s Guiding Spirit Award from the Guides Association of New York City to honor “his leadership and mentorship for other guides, through his contagious passion for the city.” Here is a clip from the award ceremony. 

Robins is the author of the recently  New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture, the first guidebook solely devoted to New York City’s Deco treasures. On May 25th,  ioin the Art Deco Society of New York for a special evening when Robins presents an illustrated talk exploring the city’s hidden Deco gems, followed by a book signing (more information here). 

This summer, Robins is teaching the following special course at the Center for Applied Liberal Arts

New York in the Jazz Age: Art Deco Architecture from Wall Street to Washington Heights 

Through a series of walking tours, students will follow the art deco style’s impact on the architecture of Manhattan. There are still a few spots left– click on the link above to register. The course coincides with the exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum: The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s.
