The Frankfurt Book Fair New York and Goethe-Institut invite all editors, translators, and other interested participants for a special panel discussion and networking event on the topic of publishing nonfiction in translation.

Finally, Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at CALA! 

New Yorkers may remember the industrial complex called 5Points in Long Island City that was covered in over 50 colorful spray-painted murals. The graffiti attracted tourists and local residents alike, helping to transform the neighborhood into a cultural destination. The murals were suddenly whitewashed before being torn down in 2014 to make way for new luxury apartments. Last week, a Brooklyn jury decided that real estate developer Jerry Wolkoff broke the law  by violating the Visual Artists Rights Act, which protects public art of “recognized stature” on someone’s property. The suit was filed by the 21 artists who painted at 5pointz and who claimed the developer failed to give them a 90-day notice and thus took away any opportunity to salvage the artwork. They made the case that street artists are descendants of the old masters of Europe and the work they create has the right to be appreciated and treated like any other art.  Art adviser and SPS instructor Renee Vara, who was an expert witness in the case, said “This is a win for artists’ rights all across the country. This is a win for the visual artists and their protection under VARA… This is a clear message by the people that the whitewash was a cruel willful act and Jerry Wolkoff was held accountable.” The jury’s decision addresses an important debate about whether graffiti should be protected by federal law and has important  implications for other murals,  street art, and development projects.

On Tuesday, November 7th at 630pm the Museum of the City of New York will host a special lecture on the challenge that New York City faces in maintaining and updating Penn Station’s fragile 110-year old tunnels, along with other examples of existing “grey infrastructure.” At the same time, NYC’s future livability depends on creating sustainable “green” infrastructure. Historian Jill Jonnes will connect the past, present, and future growth of New York City’s infrastructure. She will be joined by architect and Columbia University professor Vishaan Chakrabarti, author of a new plan for Penn Station. This weekend marks the 15th anniversary of Open House New York, an annual event that “unlocks the doors of New York’s most important buildings, offering an extraordinary opportunity to experience the city and meet the people who design, build, and preserve New York.” There are over 200 sites across all NYC boroughs  participating this year (some require advance reservation, while others are open to the public). One of the participating sites is the Museum of the City of New York, which will be hosting tours of its theater collection. While the OHNY tours are now sold out, the Museum will be hosting a fascinating program series called New York’s Future in a Changing Climate through which the public can engage with environmental and civic innovators in discussions about how New York can adapt to an age of rising waters.  The first event is a symposium on October 22nd, City of Rising Waters. which will feature powerful thinkers and activists  including author Amitav Ghosh, journalist Andrew Revkin, and community organizer Elizabeth Yeampierre. October is also the month when two major art fairs come to New York, TEFAF (the world’s pre-eminent fair in fine art and antiques), and the International Art Fair for Prints and Editions (IFPDA). In preparation for the fair openings, NYU SPS is hosting an exclusive industry panel of art fair and art business experts on October 18th who will look at the state of the art market today and analyze trends for 2018. This event is free to the public (you can find more information and RSVP here). Dialogues in Languages and Humanities (an NYUSPS initiative) together with The Department of Social and Cultural Analysis (SCA), Africana Studies and the Department of Linguistics presented a screening of the stunning documentary Talking Black in America to a full house at The Cantor Film Center on September 28th. Following the film, the audience, comprised mostly of students, engaged in a riveting conversation with a superb panel including:

Dr. Renee Blake (NYU Associate Professor of the Departments of Linguistics and Social & Cultural Analysis, Director of Africana Studies, Associate Producer and Contributor to Talking Black in America)

Dr. Jamila Lyiscott (visiting Assistant Professor of Social Justice Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Senior Research Fellow of Teachers College, Columbia University)

Dr. Cecelia Cutler (Associate Professor, Lehman College)

Dr. Blake introduced the event candidly, by unapologetically stating, “This evening is about race.” Tao Goffe (Assistant Professor and Faculty Fellow of Social and Cultural Analysis at NYU) also provided an insightful commentary on the impact of hurricanes and earthquakes to the Caribbean archipelago and greater region, stating, “We speak the same tongues as we will see in this film Talking Black,” and implored, “let us endeavor, more boldly, to think about the ecocritical effects of catastrophe that constitute our Americas.”

The film focuses on the most controversial and misunderstood of the Englishes–African American English. It explores the roots of linguistic discrimination while highlighting the impact African American Language has on the speech and culture of the United States and beyond. Often seen as error-ridden and non-standard, the film reminds viewers of how not only the lilting cadences of African American Language, but the rule-governed sophistication of its constructions have elevated the English language itself. As the documentary presented the views of everyday speakers, historians, linguists, and educators, audience members’ visceral reactions served as audible punctuation.

Following the film, Dr. Blake moderated a discussion guided by audience members’ honest and probing questions. The sparkling self-expression of Dr. Lyiscott and reflective commentary by Dr. Cutler were deftly guided by Dr. Blake. The exchanges explored the tightrope walk between inclusion and exclusion, language as access and language as limiter, and discrimination and understanding.

You may not be aware that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world (after big oil). This is due to many reasons, including the insatiable hunger for fast fashion and new styles. Textile factories release a lot of chemicals into the waterways and the eco-system, and long-term exposure to synthetic dyes has been linked to cancer.  The (plastic) microfibers that are found in some materials like synthetic fleece are less than 1 millimeter in length and easily pass through filters in washing machines and dryers. This article describes how microfibers make up 85% of human  debris on shorelines, and how they can be detected basically everywhere, “in table salt in China, in arctic waters and in fish caught off the coast of California.”

Cotton is a natural fiber, but it uses a lot of water and is one of the most chemically dependent crops in the world. 

The leather goods business makes over $100 billion a year, but critics call the manufacturing process inefficient, cruel, and with a huge environmental impact. 

One of the biggest hurdles  for those in the  fashion industry who want to be more environmentally responsible  is the complexity and lack of transparency in supply chains. According to Leo Bonanni, CEO of Sourcemap and a guest at a recent industry panel hosted by NYU SPS, “when responsible brands try to set up strong procurement process for their contractors.. that’s great… But those contractors have 15 or 20 other subcontractors and who knows where they come from or what they’re doing.” Sourcemap launched in 2009 with an open source platform that allowed anyone to input data and create maps of where things come from and what the environmental impact is. It now is helping companies assess their supply chains,  trace products to their source, and evaluate their social, financial, and environmental risks. 

The company is now doubling in size and recruiting for new positions in operations, sales, projects, and programming. 

At the same time, start up companies like New Jersey-based Modern Meadow are learning how to “biofabricate” leather without animals and local artisans across the world such as this weaving community in Teotitlan del Valle in Mexico are finding a renewed interest in traditional methods of making garments with natural dyes, which are more vivid and environmentally friendly than synthetic dyes. 

Well-known global fashion companies such as Eileen Fisher and Patagonia, are also joining the conversation and taking action to make the fashion industry more transparent, sustainable, and better for our health and our planet. 

In the next year, the Center for Applied Liberal Arts will launch an MS in Applied Fashion Merchandising with a focus on real-world practices for the ethical and sustainable creation and distribution of fashion. Recent natural disasters like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have seen volunteer numbers grow as many Americans look for ways to help.  But even before this summer, volunteering has been on the rise. This article in the New York Times describes a trend that spiked in the week after the November 2016 election. New York Cares, for example, reported a 137 percent increase compared to November 2015. And traffic on a volunteering website administered by the city of New York has risen 20% in the past few months. Nationally, the online service VolunteerMatch saw traffic increase by 7%, with the majority of would-be volunteers interested in the category “politics” which covers groups dealing with climate change, poverty, and human rights, among others. In New  York City, a study conducted by City Hall discovered that 48 percent of New Yorkers volunteer in some capacity, which is more than three  times the national average. This article in the Wall Street Journal describes how companies are going beyond the traditional model of corporate volunteer programs to allow new ways for employees to donate their professional expertise (pro-bono). Companies see this as an important tool for attracting and retaining employees looking for purposeful careers.

Develop and sharpen your own skills while helping others to develop theirs.
