Adjunct Instructor and Artist Kay Kenny’s photographs can be seen in multiple exhibits and places this summer.

In Dreams and Decay at the Atlantic Highland Arts Council, Kenny and four other photographers explore spaces that exist in various states of isolation, from deteriorating landscapes to locations with a sense of sacred urgency. This exhibit is open until July 31st at 54 First Avenue, Atlantic Highlands, NJ. 

Kenny is featured in Art in the Barn, organized by the Saugerties Artists Studio Tour in Saugerties, NY. This exhibit will be open the next two weekends, July 21st-22nd and July 28-29. The mission of the Saugerties Artists Studio Tour is to provide local artists an opportunity to present and sell their work. 

Kenny’s work Full Moon in the Meadow with Sheep was selected by SaveArtSafe for billboards in Newark and Jersey City. SaveArtSpace transforms advertisement space into Public Art by the Local Community. Since 2015 SaveArtSpace has exhibited 87 artists in advertising spaces all over the country.

For fans of  mid 20th-century modern design, just a short drive or train ride from New York City will take you to a number of amazing houses and museums that feature this decorative style, known for its clean lines,  organic curves, and love of different materials. These destinations can be perfect for a weekend getaway (now that spring is finally [hopefully] here), and can serve as inspiration for a home renovation or redecoration project. 

The Architect’s Newspaper recently featured Manitoga, the home of industrial designer Russel Wright and his wife, Mary Small Einstein, in Garrison, NY. The glass-and-wood structure has a spectacular view down to the river and features unique details and surfaces that reflect Wright’s aesthetic and talent as a designer. These include doors with  iron tools and large stones as handles and a special veneer made of birch bark. The house is open for public tours May 18th to November 12th. 

Other distinctive architectural spaces  worth seeing include the woodworker George Nakashima’s studio in New Hope, PA. and renowned craftsman Wharton Esherick’s studio and museum in Malvern, PA.

PEN America has recently announced the PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowships. The application portal opens on April 15th and the deadline to apply is July 1st.  More information from PEN America below and on their website.

The 12 month-long Writing For Justice Fellowships will commission writers to create written works of lasting merit that illuminate critical issues related to mass incarceration and catalyze public debate. The aim is to harness the power of writers and writing in bearing witness to the societal consequences by capturing and sharing the stories of incarcerated individuals, their families, communities, and the wider impact of the criminal justice system. Our goal is to ignite a broad, sustained conversation about the dangers of over-incarceration, and the imperative to mobilize behind rational and humane policies. As an organization of writers dedicated to promoting free expression and informed discourse, PEN America is honored to have been entrusted by the Art for Justice Fund to engage the literary community in addressing this pressing societal issue.

Fellows may be emerging or established writers, working in fiction, non-fiction and journalism, poetry, drama, or mixed genres. Fellows will receive an honorarium of $10,000, and may request up to $5,000 in additional funding for travel and research. In addition to financial support, Fellows may choose to be paired with a mentor to serve as a source of guidance for the project, and the cohort will convene in person twice during the course of the Fellowship. PEN America will draw on the expertise of the members of Writing for Justice Advisory Committee, as well as our network of agents, editors, publishers, partner organizations and outlets in order to assist efforts for publication and dissemination of the work of the Fellows. Opportunities for sharing the created work through public forums will be organized in New York City at the PEN World Voices Festival, the Fellow’s home community, and possibly additional locations.

The best Writing For Justice Fellowship applications will demonstrate how the proposed project plans to engage on issues of reform, fuel public debate, and facilitate the possibility of societal change. Currently and formerly incarcerated writers are highly encouraged to apply, and special provisions will be made for incarcerated writers to participate through alternative methods.

New Jersey Arts Annual Exhibition: Navigating Elements 

The exhibition Navigating Elements will focus a lens on the artistic play with content and medium around environmental themes. Topics  include: natural habitats, ecosystems, agriculture, species and biodiversity, renewable resources, recycling, waste and waste management, social practice, climate justice, climate change, and climate policies.

Congratulations to NYUSPS student Amanda Charlton, whose web series Friend Therapy will show at the Bechdel Film Fest. The 10-part web series, starring Vella Lovell (The Big Sick, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Girls) and Clea Alsip (Boardwalk Empire, Billy & Billie), can also be viewed on Facebook. Charlton is the series creator and co-director. She is now a student in the NYUSPS Diploma in Digital Filmmaking.

Founded by filmmaker Cressandra Thibodeaux, the Bechdel Film Festival is dedicated to supporting and promoting female filmmakers.

NYU SPS instructor, producer, and director Gladys Bensimon’s documentary, A Way Out, will be  featured next weekend as part of The Newark Public Library’s Black History Celebration. The screening will be followed by a special #BlackLivesMatter panel event. More details below. 

 A Way Out is a feature documentary about poverty and how we in America may overcome it. The film analyzes the factors of success through the stories of three minority men from Newark, New Jersey. These men successfully beat the odds…not by luck, but rather by deliberate support and opportunities that otherwise would have left them poor, incarcerated, or even dead.In addition to the illustrative and compelling stories, the documentary features the historic, economic and academic analysis of poverty, and the history of racism and inequality in the United States, featuring various social, political, and economic experts.

The #BlackLivesMatter movement was founded in 2013 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi as a call to action after the death of Trayvon Martin (2012) at the hands of
George Zimmerman who was subsequently acquitted of charges in 2013. On February 10, The Newark Public Library’s 3rd annual Black Lives Matter-Newark panel discussion will
examine how we got here and the systemic challenges our families and communities consistently face. Panelists will provide action steps to help repair the damage and prepare for the future.

Last fall, NYUSPS student Pauline Miller’s essay “Getting Married is Better Than Dying, Right” was published in The New York Times’ Modern Love column. Pauline began her essay in the course Write What You Know with NYUSPS CALA instructor Catherine Crawford. What follows is an interview with Pauline about her experience publishing her essay in the Times.

 How did the course Write What You Know impact the development of your piece? Was there any piece of advice that you were given by the instructor or your fellow students that really helped you? 

I think the most important thing the Write What You Know course did was to give me the confidence to keep writing. I had been keeping a journal for years, but had never taken a creative nonfiction class. I was pretty nervous about sharing my stories. But Catherine [Crawford] established a very positive, non-judgmental atmosphere and consistently offered constructive criticism. I also had a talented group of classmates who gave honest (but tactful) feedback.

How did you decide to submit your piece to The New York Times?

The week leading up to my marriage was very dramatic. I thought it would make a good Modern Love story if I could take the reader on the same roller coaster I went on.

What was the editing process like?

The editing process was very quick. It was less than two weeks from the time my piece was accepted to the date it ran. Dan Jones, the editor, was great to work with! I had never published anything before, and he really put me at ease. We talked through my essay in an hour-long phone call, and then went back and forth, mostly via email. He asked some thoughtful questions and had me expand upon a few ideas. I was surprised that he ultimately made only a few changes. They were small, but made a big impact. I have a very conversational style, so he made the essay more consistent with the general tone of the Times.

Was this your first time being published? 

  Yes. Talk about luck!

Since its publication have you gotten feedback from readers?

Readers emailed me and posted on my blog. It’s been amazing to connect with people from all over the country. Their responses have been very positive, and I was so happy to learn that my story has given hope to others who live with chronic illness.

Any advice you’d give to writers who are hoping to publish a Modern Love column?

The most useful guidance I can give to someone who wants to submit to Modern Love is to check out this google doc. It’s a list of Dan Jones’ submission tips, compiled by writer Laura Copeland.

Also, Dan likes very short cover emails because he’s extremely busy. My note to him was something like, “Dear Mr. Jones, I wrote this essay and think it’s a good fit for Modern Love. Hope you like it! Thanks for your time.” And I pasted the essay in the body of the email, as was recommended. It felt weird to write such a short introduction, but I did it, anyway. Dan later told me that even though he was swamped and not necessarily in the mood to read an entire piece when my email arrived, my first two sentences caught his eye and piqued his interest. That wouldn’t have happened if I’d written a long pitch.

You can’t control whether your essay is selected – there is some luck involved – so focus on the things you can control. Choose a love story that’s unique and timely, and tell it to the absolute best of your ability. (I worked on my piece for five months before submitting.)  If it’s not chosen for Modern Love, you’ll still have a great essay that could be published elsewhere.

Do you have any more writing projects in the works?

I’m working on various humor pieces about the absurd aspects of living with lupus. I’m submitting them to magazines (online and in print), and would like to put them all together for a book.

After 20 years as the New Jersey Star-Ledger’s film critic, Stephen Whitty recently filed his last review—this one a review of his time at the paper (read the full article here). During his tenure he interviewed many illustrious directors and actors, including Martin Scorsese, the Coen Brothers, Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, and Sophia Loren; covered much of the New Jersey film scene ranging from the Montclair Film Festival to the historic treasure of the Landmark Loew’s Jersey City Theater; and wrote over 5,000 film reviews. A much valued CALA faculty member, this semester Whitty will be teaching The Hollywood Blacklist: Onscreen and hosting a screening of Breaker Morant on Friday, May 4^th in conjunction with the spring film series From the Other Side: Foreign War Films.
