The deadline is today to apply for the position of Art Gallery Coordinator at the James Gallery located in the CUNY Graduate Center (for more information, click here). Located in the Center’s midtown location (365 5th Ave), the James Gallery is another great venue for checking out thought-provoking art exhibitions and public events. Currently, the gallery is showing “Obedience is not Careless“,   a project in which painter Jen Mazza explores language and quotation through painting, philosophy and poetry, curated by Katherine Carl. On view through December 18th. 

Here at NYU, visitors to the Grey Art Gallery  can see Neorealismo: The New Image in Italy, 1932-1960, a show that looks at life in Italy through the lens of photography before, during, and after World War II. On November 16th, the gallery hosts a conversation with Martina Caruso, the author of Italian Humanist Photography from Fascism to the Cold War.

Our houses of worship count disproportionately among our most beautiful buildings. But they are also more than just beautiful buildings. They embody the values many people hold most meaningful in their lives, and they are repositories of many people’s—even non-believers’—most cherished memories. In this illustrated lecture, we will look specifically at the Roman Catholic Church architecture of New  York City. What does their architecture tell us about the nature of Catholic belief and liturgy? What do the different styles represent? Why do Italian Catholic, Irish Catholic, and German Catholic churches look different from one another? And why should we seek to preserve these buildings in a time when most of the city’s Catholics are no longer Irish or Italian or German—when, indeed, our culture is more secular than it has ever been? We’ll explore many examples, from St. Patrick’ Cathedral to the humblest parish churches, and even non-church shrines.

In Spring 2019, Francis Morrone will be teaching the following courses:

Next week, a new show exploring the lives, work, and close friendship of artists Franz Marc and August Macke will open at the Neue Galerie.

From Neue Galerie: “In the four years prior to Macke’s death in 1914, they wrote each other scores 
of letters, visited each other’s homes, traveled together, and often discussed the development of their work. They shared ideas about art, and through their innovations helped create the movement known as Expressionism in early twentieth-century Germany. The exhibition will focus on Marc and Macke’s artistic relationship, how their lives intersected, and how their art was developed and received during their lifetimes.

Featuring approximately 70 paintings and works on paper, “Franz Marc and August Macke” is comprised of loans from public and private collections worldwide. While Marc has received acclaim in the United States, Macke has not become well known. This presentation at Neue Galerie New York is the first time that Macke’s work will be shown in an American museum exhibition, and the first exhibition in the United States on the relationship between these artists” 

The exhibition (on view from October 4th, 2018 to January 21, 2019)   is organized by the Neue Galerie New York and the Musées d’Orsay et de l’Orangerie, Paris. 

CALA students will have the opportunity to view and discuss Marc’s and Macke’s works in the upcoming course German Art: From Impressionism to the Bauhaus. The course starts next week, but there is still time to register. For more information and to register, click here.

Author and CALA instructor John Tauranac’s book, Manhattan’s Little Secrets: Uncovering Mysteries in Brick and Mortar, Glass and Stone,  hits stores this month. Featured in The New York Times, NY Patch, and the Manhattan User’s Guide, the book points out hundreds of historically important architectural details that you may pass by every day but have never noticed. 

 There’s a statue of Belgium that was originally Germany, and a buffalo hunt depicted on the Manhattan Bridge, and a clock in a sidewalk. A sarcophagus stands in a public park, and the stones from the donjon that had incarcerated Joan of Arc now serve as the base for a statue that honors her. An architect’s likeness is worked into the statuary of a building that he designed (and, no, it’s not Cass Gilbert in the lobby of the Woolworth Building), a Richard Haas trompe l’oeil doesn’t fool all the eyes, and there’s an apocalyptic vision of a collapsing Brooklyn Bridge on a cathedral wall.

We discover all these and more – 120 subjects in all – and all accompanied by Kathryn Gerhardt’s wonderful photographs that illuminate the essence of the subjects, plus two maps to put things in geographical perspective.

About the Author:

John Tauranac writes on New York City’s social- and architectural history, he teaches the subject at NYU’s School of Professional Studies, he gives tours of the city, and he designs maps. His books include the three editions of New York From the Air (Abrams); The Empire State Building: The Making of a Landmark (Scribner and Cornell), Elegant New York (Abbeville), and Essential New York (Holt Rinehart & Winston). Tauranac has contributed to The New York Times, The New York Observer, Travel & Leisure, New York Magazine, and other publications. Tauranac was named a Centennial Historian by the Mayor’s office for his work in history, he was awarded a Commendation for Design Excellence by the U. S. Department of Transportation and the National Endowment of the Arts for his role in the creation of the 1979 subway map, and he was given an award for Teaching Excellence by NYU’s School of Professional Studies in 2006.

Thank you to everyone who attended last night’s photo floor show at the Woolworth building, presented by the Photography: From Beginner to Exhibitor Summer 2018 cohort. From quirky still lifes and one-of-a-kind portraits to vibrant cityscapes, the artists showed work that reflected their unique perspective and encouraged us to look at the world in a new light. At least 8 works were sold and new friends were made. Congratulations to all the artists!

CALA Photography and Studio Art Courses:

This fascinating article from NYU’s Office of Informational Technology,  LaGuardia Studio Makes Its Red Carpet Debut at the 2018 Met Gala describes in detail the process it took to create the Tiara worn by actress Lynda Carter (best known for starring as Wonder Woman in the 1970s television series) in May at the most recent Met Gala, a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute which draws celebrities from all over the world and is known for its newsworthy fashion moments. This year, the theme was inspired by the exhibition “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” 

Carter’s golden tiara, which was decorated with the Hebrew phrase for “never forget”, was designed and created using the 3D modeling and printing resources at LaGuardia Studio. The article describes how Taylor Absher, a full-time staff member at LaGuardia and adjunct instructor at NYU SPS, used Zbrush software to design the tiara and the Studio’s  Stratasys J750 3D Printer to create the final print, which was completed just a couple of days before Carter wore it at the event. 

The tiara is only one of several high profile 3D printing projects at the LaGuardia Studio. For example,  in 2016 the studio made 3D scans of musician Björk to serve as the basis for a series of ornate masks designed and printed by Neri Oxman at MIT’s Mediated Matter Lab.
