Erol Gunduz featured in the Governors Island Art Fair (GIAF)

There are two weekends left to visit the Governors Island Art Fair (GIAF), New York’s largest independent art exhibition. Run by artists, for artists, this year the exhibition features the 3D printed artwork of NYU SPS instructor Erol Gunduz. A short ferry ride from Manhattan or Brooklyn, visitors to Governors Island will have the opportunity to explore 100 different rooms of art in what used to be military barracks. Gunduz’s work can be seen in Colonel’s Row, Building 404. Gunduz is a sculptor and educator who is interested in narrowing the divide between traditional and digital sculpture studio practices, and has worked on movies such as The Hulk and Iron Man. Gunduz teaches in the Professional Diploma in 3D Design and 3D Printing as well as other career advancement courses at NYU SPS.

Negotiating Translation Agreements- from ATA

Today (Sept. 8) at noon, the American Translator’s Association is hosting a webinar on negotiating translation agreements. From the ATA website: “Using a series of case studies, presenter Paula Arturo will demonstrate strategies that work in real-world translation business agreements. Particular attention will be paid to how translators can adapt negotiating techniques to different types of clients.” Registration information available here.

ATA is a great resource for any prospective or practicing translator. Apart from certification exams, ATA also provides networking opportunities through its chapters and affiliates.

Art & Cultural Heritage Crime Symposium Nov. 1-3

Registration is now open for the Art and Cultural Heritage Crime Symposium taking place at NYU November 1-3. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) currently ranks art crime as the third-largest criminal enterprise in the world. The increase in international art transactions has incubated a booming market for stolen and fraudulent art, and major US arts institutions still grapple with repatriation of stolen or looted objects in their collections. Co-organized by Jane C.H. Jacob, art historian and provenance research expert, Jacob Fine Art, Inc., Chris Marinello, director and founder, Art Recovery Group, and Alice Farren-Bradley, Museum Security Network, the symposium brings together experts from major museums and auction houses, NYU’s School of Law and School of Professional Studies, the US Department of Homeland Security, and the President’s Cultural Property Advisory Committee, as well as independent scholars and authors, art crime victims, art crime attorneys, forensic scientists, and other major players working to address art crime worldwide.

Join us and learn about the legal, forensic, governmental, and political strategies being employed to address the enormity of this global phenomenon. The Met Announces New Fashion Exhibit

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced its next fashion exhibit will be“Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion”, scheduled to open on November 8th. The show will feature the museum’s new acquisitions from the past decade, exploring techniques, trends, and materials that have shaped fashion from the 18th century to the present.

In this article from Artwire about the upcoming exhibit, curator Andrew Bolton explains that the Costume Institute’s mission is “to present fashion as a living art that interprets history, becomes part of the historical process, and inspires subsequent art.” The Institute now has a collection of over 35,000 costumes and accessories. This recent report from CBS news further describes fashion’s growing presence in museum collections.

But does fashion really belong in museums? Is it art? This Fall, students at the Center for Applied Liberal arts will explore these questions as they take take a behind-the-scenes look at fashion exhibitions in NYC’s most prestigious institutions, including the Museum of the City of New York, The Fashion Institute of Technology, Cooper-Hewitt (and yes, the Met as well).

Young Translators’ Road Trip to Boston

This past weekend, 14 students from the Center for Applied Liberal Arts’ Young Translators Institute joined Prof. Julie Tay on a trip to Boston, Massachusetts. From a campus tour of Harvard University to lobster rolls at Quincy Market, students had a number of quintessential Boston experiences. Other highlights included a meeting with Martin Roberts, the founder of Linguistics Systems, Inc., a multi-million dollar translation services company that employs over 7,000 translators.

The Young Translators Institute is a three-week course of study that introduces students to the business and practice of translation and interpreting. Besides going to Boston, students also visited the language service divisions at the United Nations in New York City as well as other major translation agencies and client organizations. The program culminates in a full-day symposium of panels and student presentations.

Here is a full account of the Boston trip by By Zirui Zhou, a student from Beijing:

“At the thought of a trip to Boston, the first thing that came to my mind was lobster. Personally, I had starved myself before the trip so that I could enjoy more tasty dishes when we got there!

Around 8 am, we set off from 7 E 12th Street with much curiosity. The bus was freezing but not so much as to cool our excitement. After a tedious four-hour ride, we arrived in Downtown Boston and headed straight for Quincy Market – a gourmet paradise: Steamed lobsters, lobster rolls, shrimp rolls, all of which shocked us at first sight. We had never seen lobsters that huge before. Juicy and natural, a pure taste of Boston, the lobsters seemed to translate the story of the deep Atlantic Ocean, revealing the character of the northeast itself.

East Coast United States is of course famous for prestigious universities as well. The next morning, we toured Harvard with a very tall student guide, Ramsey, who turned out to be a football star! According to Ramsey, hidden in the peace and comfort of Harvard yard are three lies concerning John Harvard: The first is that the John Harvard statue is actually not of John Harvard himself; the second is that John Harvard was not the founder of Harvard University, which is astonishing; finally, the time tag carved on the statue is incorrect. We also learned that Harvard freshmen are entitled to limitless ice cream in the dinning halls everyday.

Next, we stopped briefly on Massachusetts Ave, long enough to admire the majestic MIT building and take more pictures. Then it was off to visit Linguistics Systems, Inc., situated on a quiet street also named Broadway but this one was in Cambridge. Here we learned a lot from the company founder Martin Roberts. Apparently, to keep pace with globalization which has penetrated different Industries, the process of translation has become more than a linguistic issue. Many machine translation tools are used nowadays to deal with the massive volume of text to be translated in different directions back and forth in many different languages. Mr. Roberts told us his company has over 7000 translators in their database! It was amazing how he turned a tiny outfit started in 1967 into a million dollar business.”

Fatigued and filled with memories, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who fell asleep on the ride back to New York, dreaming of limitless ice cream.”

Coming Soon to a Restaurant Near You: 3D Printed Pizza

3D printing is the latest technology revolutionizing industry as we know it. From fabricating cars and clothes to facilitating solutions to real-world problems such as crime and housing shortages , there is no end to to 3D technology’s potential to impact everyone’s life . One of the most interesting applications of 3D technology is in the food industry. Beehex, the first company specializing in 3D printed pizza, recently announced a collaboration with the Neopolitan restaurant Ribalta, which has locations in NYC and Atlanta (full article here). Using the restaurant’s recipes and top quality ingredients, the Beehex prototype is able to print an oven-ready pizza in under 4 minutes. One of the company’s co-founders is also the creator of the first 3D food printer for NASA. The printer can be equipped with food cartridges that last 30 years, a very important feature for long-distance space missions that may last several years.

This Fall, The Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) is launching NYU’s first ever diploma in Foundations in 3D Design and 3D Printing . The deadline to apply is August 26th (more information here)

The Nida School of Translation Studies, the San Pellegrino University Foundation, and the Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) at NYU SPS present the 6th Annual Translation Studies Research Symposium on September 30th and the 1st NYU Translation Day Symposium on October 1st.

The Translation Studies Research Symposium (theme: Time and Transformation) will bring together scholars and practitioners to share and discuss their different perspectives on research in translation and the context and practice of translation in a globalized world.
