Register for CALA’s Spring 2020 After Effects II Course, Starting Tuesday!

CALA’s After Effects Level 2 course, with instructor Kalika Kharkar Sharma, is a great way to step up your motion design skills in a dramatic way and create material for your video demo reel, web portfolio or social media feed. Intended for students with basic to intermediate skills in Adobe After Effects, we begin by exploring creative transitions between video or animated scenes using the Effects that the software is famous for. Then we move on to creating a short shape-morph or explainer animation, starting the process with storyboards, working on overall timing/editing with keyframes and the Graph Editors and ending with a completed video with music, sound effects and/or voiceover. Finally, we create a text animation/lyric video, where we dive into 3D layers and innovative ways of having text appear onscreen to spoken word or song lyrics. List of Education Companies Offering Free Subscriptions due to School Closings

Last week, we shared a New York Times article written by Nir Eyal, a CALA Writing Parenthood student, which explored strategies for navigating the unprecedented number of coronavirus-related school closures around the country. Among other helpful tips, Eyal shared the benefits of technology in facilitating homeschooled education, particularly for parents who find themselves juggling their own remote work.

Writing Parenthood Student Nir Eyal Publishes NYT Article: Home-Schooling Tweens and Teens During Coronavirus Closings

Nir Eyal, a student in Estelle Erasmus’ Writing Parenthood course this Spring, recently published an article in The New York Times providing tips for parents across the country to better navigate school closures as a result of the coronavirus. Eyal emphasizes the importance of maintaining a routine for school-aged kids and suggests that, with some creative planning, the cancellations provide an opportunity for new kinds of self-regulated education.

For parents juggling their kids’ schooling with their own remote work schedules, technology can be utilized to supplement parent-taught instruction. Eyal writes, “Enrico Bertini, an associate professor of computer science and engineering at New York University, relies on technology to help home-school his 12-year-old son.” He continues, “Dr. Bertini uses a mix of free and paid sites like Outschool.com, ProdigyGame.com and KhanAcademy.org to give his son a full roster of classes. While many traditional schools provide students with access to online education during a shutdown, supplementing with other tools can help kids explore interests they don’t have time for during the school year.” Social media sites and online games, when monitored and limited appropriately, can also keep students socially active while they’re away from their friends in the classroom.

CALA Instructor Annie Heminway Publishes French Textbook With McGraw-Hill

CALA instructor Annie Heminway is the author of Must Know High School French, published this month by McGraw-Hill as part of the Must Know series. Packed with exercises, examples, and useful study tips, Heminway’s engaging book allows students to build their French skills quickly and painlessly. Annie Heminway teaches literature and creative writing in French at NYU SPS. She is a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques and has published over fifteen French self-learning books.

This Spring, Heminway will be teaching Inspired by Real Life: Reading and Writing Exofiction in French. The fully-online course is designed for individuals with high-intermediate or advanced French language ability. Students will examine French exofiction with works by French award-winning writers: Sylvain Tesson, Luc Lang, Katouther Adimi, Yasmina Reza, Jean-Paul Dubois, Samira Sedira, and Laurent Binet. Hog Island Artist Residency—Applications Due Feb 1st

Art + Nature = A Unique Hog Island Opportunity!

Are you, or do you know, an artist whose work explores and celebrates the natural world? Would your work benefit from solitary work time in a rustic cabin on a Maine coastal island?

The Audubon Artist Residency provides selected artists and writers with the opportunity to spend two weeks living and working in the Todd Wildlife Sanctuary on Hog Island, home to the acclaimed Hog Island Audubon Camp. Residents stay at the historic Bingham Cottages site, from which they can easily explore the entire 330-acre island.

There are three Residency sessions available for summer 2020. Artists and writers may apply by submitting application fee and required documentation via the Hog Island website. The application deadline is February 1; successful applicants will be notified in early March.

CALA Writing Instructor Estelle Erasmus Featured in The Week Magazine

In her most recent article for The Week, entitled “6 Powerful Phrases Every Parent Should Use,” journalist and CALA Writing instructor Estelle Erasmus reminds parents of the importance of the language they use when speaking to their children. Erasmus draws upon her own experiences with her daughter to suggest that by adding some thoughtfully-composed phrases to their repertoire, parents have the power to strengthen their child’s emotional toolkit. The list begins with, “I’m proud of you. But you should also be proud of yourself.” More than just a congratulatory expression, this formulation prioritizes the child’s own sense of achievement and, as Erasmus writes, “lets the child own the success, instead of depending on outside validation.” The five phrases that follow are similarly designed to build confidence, encourage creativity, and instill a sense of personal responsibility. At the same time, they get parents into the habit of approaching conversations more critically given the weight of their words.

Merriam-Webster Announces 2019 Word of the Year

Merriam-Webster has announced their annual Word of the Year and the winner is… “they”! It’s been a surprisingly big year for the common pronoun, which experienced a 313% search increase in 2019. As the dictionary powerhouse explains:

“English famously lacks a gender-neutral singular pronoun to correspond neatly with singular pronouns like everyone or someone, and as a consequence they has been used for this purpose for over 600 years. More recently, though, they has also been used to refer to one person whose gender identity is nonbinary, a sense that is increasingly common in published, edited text, as well as social media and in daily personal interactions between English speakers. There’s no doubt that its use is established in the English language, which is why it was added to the Merriam-Webster.com dictionary this past September.

Nonbinary they was also prominent in the news in 2019. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA) revealed in April during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on the Equality Act that her child is gender-nonconforming and uses they. Singer Sam Smith announced in September that they now use they and them as pronouns. And the American Psychological Association’s blog officially recommended that singular they be preferred in professional writing over “he or she” when the reference is to a person whose gender is unknown or to a person who prefers they. It is increasingly common to see they and them as a person’s preferred pronouns in Twitter bios, email signatures, and conference nametags.”

Backpack Drive for St. Croix Elementary School

MS in Professional Writing student Jenelle Woodrup is coordinating a backpack drive for 5th graders attending Pearl B. Larsen Elementary School in St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, a community that was affected by Hurricane Maria. Jenelle’s backpack drive includes school supplies and classroom items that will be used throughout the year.

Please join NYUSPS’ Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies (DAUS) for a Lobby Gallery opening at SPS on Thursday, Dec 12th from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.  The department is excited to present photographs of Manhattan bridges by DAUS staff member Zachary Elmassian, along with live music by Joel Ross on vibraphone and Immanuel Wilkins on alto saxophone. Joel’s album, Kingmaker, was just selected as a top ten jazz album of 2019 by the New York Times.
