The NYU Center for Ballet and the Arts is in Need of an Arabic/English Interpreter
The Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU (CBA) is looking for an Arabic-English interpreter.
An artist-at-risk is presenting his choreography in a showing on March 5 at 12:30-1:30pm at CBA (16 Cooper Square). While he speaks some English, the Center would like to hire an interpreter who can help facilitate the Q&A session.

CALA Writing Instructor Publishes Stories of Refugees in Leros
CALA writing instructor Holly St Lifer recently returned from Leros, a small Greek island off the coast of Turkey. Leros is home to a refugee camp where thousands live in limbo, awaiting asylum decisions. Holly was in Leros to volunteer with the organization Echo100Plus. Through Echo100Plus, Holly worked with refugees to put together ZINE—a digital publication that gives “a voice to the voiceless.” Through essays, art, interviews, and photography, the refugees of Leros share their stories.
This semester Holly is teaching Feature Writing for Print and Digital Media at the Center for Applied Liberal Arts.

CALA Writing Instructor Publishes Essay: “What a rodent taught me about love—yes, love”
NYUSPS CALA writing instructor Nicole Kear published an essay about how her family ended up being the proud and loving owners of a pet hamster named Dolly—despite Nicole’s terror of hamsters. Reflecting on how she learned to love Dolly, Nicole writes, “Parenthood pushes you into some strange spots, places that are odd, unpleasant and difficult. But those places are exactly where things get interesting. Those are the places where we grow.” Read more here.

CALA Writing Instructor Chandler Klang Smith’s Novel Published by Hogarth Press
Congratulations to NYUSPS CALA instructor Chandler Klang Smith, whose novel The Sky Is Yours was published last month by Hogarth Press. Set in a futuristic and dystopian city known as Empire Island, Smith’s novel tells the story of three young people trying to survive fire, conspiracy, mayhem, drugs—and two dragons. NPR book critic Jason Heller commented, “In this bombshell of a novel, Chandler Klang Smith has imagined an unimaginable world: scathingly clever and gorgeously strange, The Sky Is Yours is at once faraway and disturbingly familiar, its singular chaos grounded in the universal realities of love, family, and the deeply human desire to survive at all costs. U.S. Department of Labor Statistics Show Promising Growth for Translation & Interpreting
According to a career report published by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Translation and Interpreting is currently one of the top 20 fastest-growing career paths. Between 2014 and 2024, employment is projected to increase from 61,000 to 78,500—a 29% change. This contributes to a growing body of evidence (including a report from CNBC, which we previously posted about) suggesting a bright future for the industry.

CALA Foreign Language Faculty Retreat Recap

A Foreign Language Faculty Retreat was held for CALA foreign language instructors the evening of Friday the 13th in the Woolworth Building. Faculty of French, Spanish, Italian, Persian, Mandarin, Norwegian, and Portuguese joined Paula Azevedo Perez (Program Administrator), Suzanne Kaplan-Fonseca (Foreign Languages Program Coordinator) and Lisa Springer (Associate Dean, Division of Languages and Humanities) for casual conversation over a light supper, a discussion of the program and classes, and sharing of professional development and classroom resources. Voices were heard, ideas were exchanged, and a community of practice was rejuvenated. Perhaps you recognize an instructor or two in the photos below?
