Upcoming Event: NYUSPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies’ Humanities Fest

Please join the NYU Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies (DAUS) for Humanities Fest, celebrating the creativity of their students and faculty in music, art, and creative writing. They will also celebrate the release of the newly re-imagined Dovetail, an art and literary magazine. The event will feature live music, a display of paintings, drawings, and other works of art, as well as literary readings and storytelling.

Musicians include John King on Oud (Middle Eastern style lute), Harris Eisenstadt on drums and percussion, and Ozan Aksoy on Saz (Turkish string instrument).

Refreshments will be served.

NYC Film Green Initiative Offering Eco-Friendly Resources to Local Film Productions

A Novelist in the Digital Age:
The Good, Bad, and the Ugly 

Meredith Sue Willis will speak on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at the morning program of the Ethical Culture Society of Essex County, New Jersey on A Novelist in the Digital Age: The Good, Bad, and the Ugly. The talk will cover her personal journey from hand-stapled comics to commercial book publication to web journals and digital publishing.

There will also be a discussion of how computers and the Internet have changed the writer’s process–and the world of publishing. The program begins at 11:00 AM and takes place at the Ethical Culture Building, 516 Prospect Street, Maplewood, at the intersection of Parker Avenue.

The program is free and open to the public.

NYC Mayor’s Office Initiative: One Book, One New York

Commissioner Julie Menin of The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment has announced the launch of the second annual “One Book, One New York” program—a city-wide initiative to enrich our cultural perspectives through literature and foster community among NYC residents, local libraries, and bookstores.

NETA 2018 Conference: Diversity Through Language

Get ready for the upcoming New England Translator’s Association (NETA) conference: DIVERSITY THROUGH LANGUAGE, held on Saturday, April 28, 2018, in collaboration with UMass Boston at the UMass Boston Campus Center, 3rd floor.

The conference brings together academic scholars, researchers, and experts to give attendees the opportunity to learn and exchange ideas and to network with other members of the translation and interpretation field. The conference features four tracks: 

  1. Translation,
  2. Interpreting,
  3. Auxiliary/support services/technology, and
  4. Academic section.

We are also pleased to write that Julie Tay, one of our accomplished M.S. in Professional Translation faculty members, will be holding a talk entitled “Considering Linguistic Racism and the Problematics of ‘Diversity’ for Translators and Interpreters of English” as part of the conference. The session will take place from 2:00-3:00pm, so don’t miss it!

CALA Instructor Meera Thompson to Show Paintings in Atlantic Gallery Solo Exhibition

This June, NYU SPS CALA instructor Meera Thompson will be exhibiting a new series of paintings in a solo show at the Atlantic Gallery in Chelsea. Please see the press release below for full details.

Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of ALLEGRO, an exhibition of recent work by Meera Thompson. The paintings will be on view from Tuesday, June 5 through Saturday, June 23, 2018 and a reception for the artist will be held on Thursday evening, June 7 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

Meera Thompson’s highly expressive gestural abstractions explore the way imagination transforms visual memories. Conceived as a series and virtually unfurling like Chinese scrolls or unfolding like Japanese screens, each group of images in ALLEGRO recreates the fleeting pace of passing moments. Painted in gouache, ink and watercolor on heavy cotton papers, the lush painterly textures and sensuously saturated colors of her works evoke the quickening tempo of changing scenes.

ALLEGRO is Meera Thompson’s sixth solo show at Atlantic Gallery. She studied at the Art Students League, graduated from Vassar College, and earned an M.F.A. from Boston University. She teaches Studio Art at the School of Professional Studies at New York University.

NYU Connect: From LaGuardia Studio to NYU Langone Health

A recent article published by Connect, the NYU IT news source, discussed an innovative partnership between the 3D printing and medical industries, highlighting new real-world applications of the technology and opening the door for further collaborative possibilities. Doctor Eduardo D. Rodriguez, director of the NYU Langone Face Transplant Program and surgeon responsible for the first successful facial transplant in New York, worked with the LaGuardia Studio team (including CALA instructors Taylor Absher and Dhemerae Ford) to develop a process for 3D printing detailed and highly realistic masks of facial transplant donors.

The impetus for the project stemmed in part from a perceived shortcoming in the donation process; the new and improved masks preserve a donor’s likeness and honor their family in a way that previous silicone versions simply could not. But Dr. Rodriguez also hopes that it will alleviate some of the hesitancy around making donations in the future, saying, “It is important to ensure we are meeting the needs of these families; to make their decisions easier while at the same time creating the best opportunity for our face transplant patients who are waiting to find their perfect match.”
