Community Dialogues & TV Script Readings: A Few Exciting Events Hosted by Friends of CALA

Tomorrow night at 9pm, the I AM series—monthly performance and conversation events with a mission to “heal and connect with art and heart”—will be celebrating its one-year anniversary by exploring the theme of ONE. I AM invites participants to share stories that consider how the theme resonates in their own lives.

On November 7th, IAMPERSPECTIVE will be hosting “The People’s Perspective,” a post-election conversation event.

 IAMPERSPECTIVE is a series of one-on-one conversations aimed at fostering connection and embracing the diverse range of individual perspectives that form our communities.

On Sunday, November 11th, Gabriel DeBear Paye and Emilio Tavarez will be hosting a reading of the pilot of their new TV drama, Edge People. 

The series tells the story of a group of adult immigrants and their English teacher, who turn to one another for comfort and support as they struggle with deportation, family separation, and harassment.

Harper’s Magazine Publishes Excerpt of Can Xue’s Love in the New Millennium, Translated by Annelise Finegan Wasmoen

An excerpt from Can Xue’s Love in the New Millennium, expertly translated by the Academic Director of the MS in Translation, Annelise Finegan Wasmoen, has been published in the Harper’s Magazine November issue. Can Xue’s novel has been hailed as “the most ambitious work of fiction by a writer widely considered the most important novelist working in China today.” The excerpt, entitled “Train Dreams,” gives readers an enticing glimpse at the novel in anticipation of its full release by Yale University Press on November 20th.

Others seek out the refuge of Nest County, where traditional Chinese herbal medicines can reshape or psychologically transport the self. Each life is circumscribed by buried secrets and transcendent delusions.

NYUSPS/NSTS 2018 Translation Conference Weekend Recap

The NYU/NSTS Translation Conference has officially come to a close for 2018, and what a great event it was! On September 28th and 29th, fifty-seven members of the translation community—including many of CALA’s own faculty, students, and alumni—convened at the Woolworth Building to learn about the importance of publishing translations and share insights on navigating an ever-changing industry.

The Nida School of Translation Studies kicked off the weekend with their 8th Annual Research Symposium, a series of discussions and lectures that addressed the potential of translation and publishing both in traditional and emerging digital spaces. Presenters and panelists furthered ongoing conversations about the impact of technology on the work of translators; opportunities for leveraging technology to facilitate and streamline the research process; and the important role of university presses like UNC Press in acquiring and promoting works of translation.

Attendees returned on Saturday morning with coffee and conference programs in hand, eager to start the NYUSPS CALA Translation Symposium. The agenda on Saturday provided a practical complement to the theoretical perspectives of the previous day’s panels. M.S. in Translation professor Dr. Elizabeth Lowe’s keynote speech addressed the critical role of translation in global discourses in an era of rising nationalism, retrenchment, and polarization. Following Dr. Lowe, industry veterans from a range of non-fiction publications compared their approaches to translation within their specific professional contexts.

For example, Jesse Browner explained that at a multi-language organization like the United Nations, where he serves as the Chief of English Verbatim Reporting, translation lives at the center of its daily operations.

Gabrielle D’Addario, Senior Manager of International Publishing at Buzzfeed, shared a very different perspective. She explained that because Buzzfeed does not translate all of its features, they have developed a set of criteria based on the intended audience and subject matter to determine whether a piece will be translated, and into what languages.

In the final panel of the weekend, editors and publishers from HarperCollins, New Vessel Press, and Words Without Borders echoed the idea that a complicated balance exists in literary translation between selectivity and the desire to provide a platform for a variety of voices.

We would like to thank our speakers, attendees, and staff once again for making this year’s conference such a success. We are also pleased to announce that the theme of our next conference will be Translation and Social Justice, which encompasses a wide range of pertinent topics from navigating immigration systems to making healthcare information accessible. NY Post Article: This Manhattan Firm is Proving Translation is a Human Industry

Whether you’re backpacking in Madrid or attending an international conference in Dubai, anyone with a smartphone has access to machine translation services to help them communicate and navigate in real time. The increasing sophistication and availability of this technology make it reasonable to imagine that perhaps the need for human translators is declining. A recent article in the New York Post, however, proves that translation is now a more popular (and profitable) industry than ever.

Last year, Manhattan-based firm Transperfect— already the largest language service in the world—experienced unprecedented growth in revenue and profit, allowing them to add 290 new jobs to their roster. CALA is proud to say that Steven Mai, an MS in Translation alum and the keynote speaker at our 2017 Translation Symposium, began working for the company shortly after his graduation in May 2015 and has grown quickly into his role as Senior Project Manager. With no sign of slowing down, Transperfect’s success is a good indicator of continued growth for the industry.

The first volume of Patents on the Soles of Your Shoes is a book intended for readers who are seriously interested in inventions and the documents that drive them. From Nike Inc., sole systems with on-board biometric sensors and peek-a-boo windows, to Sanuk® “hoodies” for your feet, via Geox Amphibiox “holey” shoes and Asics® gel soles, this reference book is all about patents on the soles of your shoes — and elsewhere. Special Event: A Reading of DOUBT by John Patrick Shanley, directed by John Erman

Please join us for a special event on Thursday, October 18, from 10am-1pm. Acclaimed Broadway, film, and TV actors will read John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play DOUBT, directed by NYUSPS CALA instructor John Erman. 

Doubt is set in a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, where a strong-minded woman wrestles with conscience and uncertainty as she is faced with concerns about one of her male colleagues. This play by John Patrick Shanley—the Bronx-born-and-bred playwright and Academy Award-winning author of Moonstruck—dramatizes issues straight from today’s headlines within a world re-created with knowing detail and a judicious eye.

Celebrating Women in Translation Month

As this year’s Women in Translation month comes to a close, we here at CALA would like to celebrate by highlighting the accomplishments of the talented and dedicated women in our translation faculty. Here are some of their most recent publications and milestones:


Jean Campbell gave a paper titled “Freedom, Self-determination and Automation: Considering Political Impulses in the Age of Digitalization” at the International Society for Universal Dialogue in Lima, Peru. It will be published in the journal Dialogue and Universalism (Polish Academy of Science in Warsaw). She was also elected Secretary of the Society.

Francoise Herrmann will give a presentation titled “Green as a context for translation” at the American Translators Association 59th Annual Conference and is author of the forthcoming Patents on the soles of  your shoes, volume 1.

Elizabeth Lowe received the 2018 SPS Teaching Excellence Award and will be giving the keynote, “The Global Politics of Translation Publishing,” at the 2018 Center for Applied Liberal Arts Translation Symposium.

Jenny McPhee published two books in translation this year, Neapolitan Chronicles by Anna Mara Ortese, translated with Ann Goldstein(New Vessel Press) and The Kremlin Ball by Curzio Malaparte (New York Review Books).

She will be giving two presentations about the translation, “A Journey of 10,000 Miles: Translating Environmental Nonfiction” at the American Translators Association 59th Annual Conference and “Un viaje de 15 000 kilómetros: La traducción de un libro de no ficción ambientalista” at the Mexican Translator’s Association / Guadalajara International Book Fair.

Jacques SchiffrinSandra Smith has two books in translation forthcoming, Jacques Schiffrin: A Publisher in Exile by Amos Reichman (Columbia University Press) and Laurent Gounelle’s novel Then you will find the treasure within (Little, Brown). Her translation of Marceline Loridan-Ivens’ But you did not come back (Grove Atlantic) won the 2016 Jewish Book Award for best Biography/Autobiography/Memoir. She will be participating in the Brooklyn Festival Bookend event “Not Invisible Today: Winners of PEN Translation Prizes at the Word Bookstore, September 11, 7pm-8:30pm.

As immigration ignites new conversations in the U.S.,  it continues to be a divisive issue across the globe. This film series explores the experiences of people who leave their homeland seeking a better life and new opportunities. From the U.S. to Italy and Germany, these films portray the values and aspirations, dreams and nightmares associated with the places where immigrants and refugees settle.  As much as these stories are about exile and marginalization, they are also about connecting with others and the power of a human bond that transcends geographic borders and stereotypes.
