Congratulations to writer and CALA faculty, Frederic Richter, on the premiere of a CNN Original Series on which he was a writer. The series will premiere this Sunday at 10 pm.

JERUSALEM: CITY OF FAITH AND FURY tells the story of one of the most controversial cities in history through six epic conflicts and rivalries that shaped and defined it. Know Your Village: Kfar Sirkin, Israel

This paper is part of a series for the Center of Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) at NYU SPS by students who took Kelly Carroll’s Behind the Scenes in New York: Preserving a City of Historic Neighborhoods in a previous semester. The course project looks at interesting buildings and other types of architecture in New York City, and elsewhere, that currently do not have landmark status. The authors in this series draw upon extensive research to share what is culturally and historically significant about each structure to make a case for why it is important to protect these sites from destruction and preserve them for future generations.

Water Tower

From student, Noa Atzom‘s paper:

“Kfar Sirkin was established in 1936, by a group of young immigrants from Germany, who bought the land from the Arab landlords.

The first and most important building needed to be built was the Water Tower. The tower and the water pump work together and provide clear drinking water to 300 households and farms to this very day. The Water Tower is located in the highest point of the village, it is 16 meters high/ 52.5 feet, it has 3 floors and one water pool where the water is kept.

Beside providing water the Tower had a few more functions. On the top of the tower was the main guard post, from where you can see the entire village and see if anyone is trying to reach it. Also, back in time in this small village they didn’t have any technical way to communicate, so from the top of the tower they communicated with the main city from east and the settlements on the mountains from west. They communicated using flags during the days and Morse Coding with a flashlight during the nights.”

60 Wall Street: “The tower was designed by Kevin Roche, John Dinkeloo & Associates to fit its surroundings with a postmodern, Greek revival, and neoclassical look to emphasize both height and size. 60 Wall Street is surrounded by slender pre-World War II towers such as 70 Pine Street to the north, 48 Wall Street to the west, and 20 Exchange Place to the south, making a prominent impact on the Lower Manhattan skyline. The lobby has an entrance, open weekdays only, to the Wall Street subway station (2 and ​3 trains) on the New York City Subway’s IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line.

60 Wall Street is also known as a former locus of Occupy Wall Street activity during the protest occupation of nearby Zuccotti Park. In an October 2011 article in Bloomberg Businessweek entitled “60 Wall: The Real Headquarters of OWS,” reporter Mark Gimein noted that the atrium was scheduled to host activist events like “the “vision and goals” meeting, the facilitation training sessions, the communications meeting.” (Wikipedia)

Know Your City: Hell Gate Bridge

Through many of our courses at CALA we celebrate the history and passions of our city and now through the Know Your City series we will focus attention on significant historic locations. Matthew Wolchko’s paper, excerpted below, discusses the Hell Gate Bridge:

A great bridge in a great city, although primarily utilitarian in its purpose, should nevertheless be a work of art to which Science lends its aid.

“Several bridges have been designated New York City Landmarks; obviously Roebling’s Brooklyn Bridge, but also the Queensborough Bridge, as well as the Washington Bridge and University Heights Bridge, both over the Harlem River. Several of these spans are also on the National Register of Historic Places. While there can be differences of opinion, the Hell Gate Bridge, while recognized by engineering societies as something of a technical marvel, does not seem to attain much notoriety. Perhaps because it only serves railroad traffic, or that it traverses a somewhat less populated Randalls Island, it has escaped much current notoriety. …

Hell Gate Bridge Construction, 1915

It would be possible, although not easy to express in a short narrative, all of the engineering struggles that were overcome in the design and construction of the bridge and its approaches. Poor soils on the Ward and Randalls Island side, required deep caissons, especially at the Bronx side Tower. Constructing the initial connection parallel to the still operating New Haven Railroad tracks and embankment, where boulders were used for backfill, was another issue. Designing the Queens-side approach viaduct and pier spacing to conform to the street grid also presented challenges; although the Borough was barely built- up in 1915, things soon changed as the population grew.

Of particular note is that the Hell Gate Bridge was the first major bridge to undergo measured stress testing in the field. As scientific research, Lindenthal himself paid for stress testing of the bottom chord of the bridge at various milestones of the construction, under load.”

Know Your City: 325 Bowery – Home of CBGB

The course project looks at interesting buildings and other types of architecture in New York City, and elsewhere, that currently do not have landmark status. Through many of our courses at CALA we celebrate the history and passions of our city and now through the Know Your City series we will focus attention on significant historic locations. One such landmark is located at 315 Bowery. Today, it’s home to the fashion house of John Varvatos, but in 1973, it was a bar and music venue called CBGB. 

Christian Ricci’s essay, with wonderful photographs, and maps, explores 315 Bowery: 

“Opened in 1973 on Bowery in Manhattan’s East Village, CBGB was a bar and music venue which features prominently in the history of American punk rock, New Wave and Hardcore music genres. The club’s owner, Hilly Kristal, was always involved with music and musicians, having worked as a manager at the legendary jazz club Village Vanguard booking acts like Miles Davis. When CBGB first opened its doors in the early seventies the venue featured mostly country, blue grass, and blues acts (thus CBGB) before transitioning over to punk rock acts later in the decade. Many well known performers of the punk rock era received their start and earliest exposure at the club, including the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, Blondie, and Joan Jett. During the New Wave era, performers like Elvis Costello, Talking Heads and even early performances from the Police graced the stage in the now legendary venue.”

Faculty Profile: Donna Walker-Kuhne – Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Arts

Today, when the 2021 Oscar nominations were announced, seems like a perfect day to recognize Donna Walker-Kuhne’s contribution to the promotion of diversity in the arts. Donna Walker-Kuhne is the founder of Walker International Communications Group, a marketing, press, and audience development consulting agency. Her team specializes in multicultural marketing, group sales, multicultural press, and promotional events. Walker-Kuhne is acknowledged as the nation’s foremost expert in audience development by the Arts & Business Council and has devoted her professional career to increasing access to the arts. She has raised over $23 million in earned income promoting the arts to multicultural communities.

She was formerly Vice President, Marketing and Communications for New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

A veteran of over 22 Broadway productions providing multicultural marketing and group sales most recently for Once on this Island, The Lion King, Aladdin, Smokey’s Joe’s Café  Little Rock, HUGHIE, A Raisin in the Sun, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk, STICK FLY, Time Stands Still, Driving Miss Daisy and Ragtime. Her current non-profit clients also include Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre,  The August Wilson African American Cultural Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Staten Island Arts Council and HARLEM WEEK.

On International Women’s Day Artnet published a great article: 26 Art-World Women Celebrate the Women Who Inspire Them, From Feminist Art Critic Linda Nochlin to Arte Povera Legend Marisa Merz.

“It is not always easy being a woman in this world, and being a woman in the art world can be doubly challenging. Gallery rosters and museum collections around the world have been skewed against women for centuries, and many of today’s top institutions still have yet to appoint a female director. Even so, there is a vast community of women in the art world, dedicated to supporting and uplifting each other.

Life is a Cabaret at CALA!

The Center for Applied Liberals Arts is delighted to welcome Daniel Bienert, aka Daniel Isengart, this semester.

Starting on Friday, March 12 (Liza Minnellis’ birthday!) at 2 PM, Bienert’s course, Life is a Cabaret, begins.

The course will dip into the multi-faceted research Bienert has compiled over 20 years as an entertainer who specializes in vintage cabaret material, and will take you through the rich history of this gloriously ephemeral art form. For your enjoyment, watch your new instructor perform below:

Since his cabaret debut in New York in 1997, Bienert has become a spokesperson for, and specialist in French and Weimar-era cabaret culture. He has performed in countless venues including Joe’s Pub and Café Sabarsky and has been featured at special events at MoMA, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, SF MoMA, and The Cleveland Museum of Modern Art.

Faculty Profile: Leonard Cortana – Racial Literacy and Anti-Racism Practices Series

CALA faculty, Leonard Cortana, is a Ph.D Candidate at the Cinema Studies Department at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and a Fellow at the Berkman Klein Center, Harvard Law School. He holds undergraduate degrees in comparative politics and Spanish from Sciences Po Aix en Provence (France) and a EU Commission NOHA Masters degree in humanitarian assistance from Deusto University (Spain).

Leonard Cortana

Cortana is also a filmmaker. His last documentary, Marielle’s Legacy Will not Die,  follows activist movements spreading the intersectional legacy of Afro-Brazilian activist and politician Marielle Franco in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. You can see his work here: Leonard Cortana Vimeo His doctoral research focuses on the circulation of transnational film narratives about racial justice and activist movements that re-open wounded historical memories between Brazil, France and the US. 

Cortana also earned a BA in cinema and aesthetics from Sorbonne University Paris. Prior to his doctoral studies, he conducted several artistic and educational projects with non-profits and UN agencies that engage with youth in multiple countries including Chile, Brazil, France, and Bulgaria. He became a Trainer for the European Commission’s Youth Program projects and the Children International Summer Village Organization (CISV) and designed methodologies in theater and storytelling for social inclusion.
