Barbara Inge Karsch, an instructor in the M.S. in Translation (MST) program at CALA, has been awarded a Dean’s Faculty Teaching and Learning Innovation Scholar Grant. Her project focuses on establishing measures of terminology entries that are driven by the practical needs of a translator. MST students currently receive a foundation in terminology management, including classification, research, and the documentation of their findings in a terminology management system (TMS). Yet, there is very little documentation on measuring both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of entries in a TMS. Establishing a framework to measure these entries will equip translation students with a skillset that will benefit their clients in the public and private sectors.
Representing CALA among the Innovation Scholar grantees for this academic year, Professor Karsch will partner with the Center for Academic Excellence and Support (CAES) to prepare, complete, and present her research. Projects were evaluated based on their potential “to create inventive curricular and teaching design initiatives that challenge conventional classroom boundaries and engage students in rich and meaningful learning experiences.” Professor Karsch intends to implement her research to refine the learning objectives of her core MST course, Theory & Practice of Terminology, and to better prepare students for the workplace.
