SPS faculty member Anne Marie Goetz was recently featured in the launch of In Her Words: She Resists, an NYT newsletter series examining the pivotal historical role of women in resistance movements. Women have often formed the tactical and intellectual core of these movements, in which femininity has been strategically deployed, in Goetz’s words, as “a force that will dampen or discourage any violence.” Successful power realignments driven by female activism nonetheless rarely result in leadership roles for the women involved. The NYT series will examine these dynamics and their evolution in the era of social media through a series of in-depth profiles from across the globe.
In Her Words: She Resists dovetails with CALA’s semester theme of “Your Voices, Your Votes: Activism Around the World.” Check out our film series, featuring politically-themed global films including Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey and the Academy Award-Nominated documentary The Cave. Those with an interest in politics and gender should also check out these upcoming CALA courses: The Evolution of American Free Speech, Great Modern Speeches, Wit Against the Patriarchy: Mid-Century Women Writers, and Plays with a Social Conscience.
