1969 was a wild year and there have been many 50th anniversary events to remind us of the milestones and the history made, and lived through. Longreads published Kate Walter’s essay “Woodstock: My Queer Love Story” about her journey, from the Woodstock peace and music festival in upstate New York in August 1969, to 2019 and its 50th anniversary: “Kate Walter went to Woodstock in 1969 with her boyfriend. She went back in 1994 with her girlfriend. She’s not going back again.” Walter’s essay captures the excitement of the original festival – getting there, the music, staying up all day and night, the endless rain, wet clothes and tents – being young. Then there was the 25th anniversary and everything had changed. Fifty years on Kate commented about writing this essay, “I worked on that piece for months. The trick was getting the right balance of my relationship with Joe and Woodstock as the setting.” To read Walter’s story click Longreads
“Woodstock: My Queer Love Story” perfectly captures what Walter will be teaching at CALA this fall: Crafting Great Essays From Personal Experience. The course starts on Monday, September 16, at 6:45 pm and runs for 8 weeks. There are still some slots open.
