Exciting news from CALA’s Andrew Dicus, Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor of Applied Writing: Introducing the Storytelling Lab!
As strategic storytelling emerges as a critical skill in any professional’s 21st-century toolkit, and as new technologies in social media, gaming, augmented reality, and artificial reality expand opportunities for creative storytelling, NYU’s Center for Applied Liberal Arts is developing new tools and opportunities for students and faculty hoping to explore applications for multimedia storytelling. Whether you are a small startup hoping to launch a company podcast, an aspiring documentary filmmaker, or a freelance writer looking to break into new markets, we are working to develop affordable and accessible resources to assist you.
As part of these efforts, we are pleased to offer a central hub where students and faculty can explore a more comprehensive approach to storytelling at CALA. Visit the Storytelling Lab website to explore courses in storytelling, which you can browse to find course pathways to help you to grow within disciplines, including creative writing, multimedia storytelling, professional storytelling, and creative nonfiction—or benefit from the cross-pollination of different disciplines, using courses like character development to enhance design strategies or marketing pitches. Or, learn about applications for storytelling in different industries, from politics to entrepreneurial journalism. Check out our ongoing Call to Action initiative, a series that provides information, events, student work, and resources relating to our social justice and civic engagement themes. Past and future themes include Mass Incarceration, The Immigrant Experience, and Environmental Justice.
Finally, as always, stay tuned: more resources, faculty profiles, and Call to Action content is forthcoming. And if you are a current or prospective student and would like further information, please contact us at sps.calastorytelling@nyu.edu.
