Artist and designer Sangeetha Kowsik is pleased to invite you to the opening of her latest exhibition of Arabic Calligraphy artwork titled “Allah Swami” on May 7th at NYU. The exhibit will run through the summer on the 4th floor of the Global Spiritual Life Building (GCASL).
Allah Swami is a culmination of Kowsik’s main passions in life: faith and design. The goal of her exhibition is to provide some background on lesser known aspects of these cultures and to show how disparate things like Hinduism and Arabic calligraphy actually have many parallels and can be combined seamlessly. Allah and Swami both mean “God” in Arabic and Sanskrit, respectively.
Products featuring the artwork from the exhibition, including calligraphy prints, textiles, and apparel, will be available for purchase in the popup shop Ihsan Ishan (translating to beauty and omnipresent in Arabic and Sanskrit) starting at 730pm on the 4th Floor. Accompanying the popup shop will be a special music performance by Rishab Sharma (Sitar) and Azam Ali Khan (Tabla).
Part of the proceeds from sales will be given to the charity Yemen Aid, directly benefiting women and children. This was inspired by the Hindu law of “Annadhanam,” meaning to give and provide food. Since her work involves the Arabic language and culture, Kowsik chose to give to the Arab nation of Yemen.
