Landscape: A Sense of Place
May 26th thru June 26, 2016
Congratulations to Kay Kenny, artist and CALA instructor, who has work in a group show in Brooklyn which opens this week.
Landscape: A Sense of Place is an exhibition that reflects the ambitious, innovative and contemporary practices in painting, printmaking, photography and mixed media today. The work explores the distinct, varied, and symbolic nature of the landscape—work that is made in an imaginative and compelling way. Annette Rose-Shapiro, managing editor of ARTNews, curated the show.
Site:Brooklyn is a street level gallery located in the heart of the Gowanus arts district (165 7th St). The gallery is dedicated to exhibiting a wide range of emerging and mid-career artists. The gallery invites artists, curators and writers to engage in lively exhibitions, criticism and the exchange of ideas through art, reflecting our times and shaping our culture.
From Site:Brooklyn “How does an artist frame a landscape? Inevitably, it is an act of choosing: what goes in, what goes out? Poussin and Lorraine first brought landscape, which was previously relegated to merely backdrop for other images, into a subject of its own. After the Impressionist revolution, by the 20th century, the definition of “landscape” expanded considerably. Photography became widespread. Also, it included cityscapes and the explosion suburban subjects, conceptualization, abstraction, and gesture. Artists also brought in other materials such as video, collage, or elements earth or city themselves.Fundamentally, landscape posits the challenge of how we view and engage with the world around us. This exhibition seeks to show how contemporary artists take up this challenge.”
Kay Kenny is teaching Photography Book Project this summer, starting on June 1, 2016. Click on link for details and to register.
