When: Friday, January 27 – Saturday, January 28
Where: Jacobs Room | The Center for Urban Science + Progress | 1 MetroTech Center, 19th Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201 (map, entrance on Jay street)
Noise pollution is one of the topmost quality of life issues for urban residents in the United States, affecting a significant portion of the population. Noise exposure has been shown to have negative effects in health, education and the economy, and thus it is generally agreed upon that its mitigation is in the public interest.
This workshop marks the official launch of the Sounds of New York City project (SONYC), a new initiative funded by the National Science Foundation, seeking to inject technological solutions into the cycle of noise pollution. SONYC’s vision is that of a cyber-physical system integrating intelligent sensor networks capable of 24/7 noise monitoring in urban environments, data science solutions for the analysis of noise patterns at city scale, and the use of citizen science for motivating and coordinating the actions of the many humans in the loop towards the common goal of noise mitigation. This ambitious agenda can only be pursued in close collaboration between academia, industry, government and local communities.
The SONYC Kick-Off Workshop will present our vision, the progress that we have made to date, and the activities that we plan to pursue in the short to mid-term. It will also provide ample opportunity for an exchange of ideas amongst the project’s participants, invited experts and stakeholders, and for discussing the strategic direction of the project going forward.
