Spence-Chapin is a non-profit organization that provides a supportive community for all families created by adoption. We are recruiting adult adoptees over 21 to serve as Volunteer Mentors in our Adoption Mentorship Program. Not only do Mentors find it rewarding to engage with adopted youth, they also grow in their own adoption journey.
The Adoption Mentorship Program supports adoptees in the 6th to 12th grade to make friends who share similar experiences, participate in fun activities, and discuss adoption and identity in a safe space.
Our Volunteer Mentors serve as role models who can encourage Mentees to ask questions, feel comfortable with their identities, and develop healthy self-esteem. We meet monthly on Saturdays during the school year for educational and social outings throughout the NYC area. Some previous activities have included ice skating, trips to aquariums and zoos, and classes on painting, fencing, pasta-making, and mask-making.
Interested NYU Silver alumni can learn more by visiting our website at www.scnyc.org/mentorship for more details about volunteering as a Mentor.
