Welcome to the SMART Lab

The Social Machines and Robotics (SMART) Lab focuses on the development of socially and emotionally intelligent agents, e.g robots and Embodied Conversational Agents, that are capable of interacting and communicating in a natural way with humans (social AI), and their applications for social good.

This entails three intertwined and complementary axes:

  1. Social Behaviour Perception: Developing Social Artificial Intelligence (social AI) in machines is a major scientific problematic that involves the multimodal analysis, modeling, and recognition of social and emotional signals in the context of human-human and human-machine interactions.
  2. Social Behaviour Generation: Implementation of social AI within the design and development of natural interfaces (interactive tablets, virtual agent, robotic systems). The research focuses on the development of interfaces express through their figure a high degree of social intelligence with characteristics such as expressiveness, Theory of Mind and empathy, and customization and adaptation.
  3. Applications for Social Good: Employ socially intelligent machines in applications for social good which are inline with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically, the applications for education and healthcare.

SMART Lab is part of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR), New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD).
