Just Do You (JDY) is a brief meta-intervention that was designed with and for young adults living with serious mental illnesses who are experiencing one of their first contacts with the adult mental health system. It was designed to help orient young people to their clinics, their programs, their providers, and typical mental health service components, while also encouraging them that they can be partners in their mental health care decisions.
JDY aims to Prepare, Ready, Inspire, Motivate, and Empower (PRIME) young adults in the early phase of their treatment to manage their mental health, collaborate with providers, and engage in treatment to enhance personal recovery. JDY targets empirically identified barriers to engagement in treatment such as stigma, mistrust of providers, negative beliefs about treatment, social norms, and low self-efficacy. JDY is co-facilitated by a Recovery Role Model (RRM) and a clinician relying on youth oriented modalities. The program uses a range of novel, youth-centered strategies that include Conversations (‘mental health related’), Narrative storytelling, Education, Creative arts, and Technology (C-NECT).
