NYU Silver is deeply invested in the professional development of both our students and licensed practitioners. We stand apart from many other schools of social work by having an office within the school devoted to the career and professional development of our students.
Our Office of Career & Professional Development (CPD), in partnership with the wider university’s NYU Wasserman Center for Career Development, provides comprehensive resources, tools and programs designed to serve as a bridge between students’ academic experiences, identities and their career paths. By helping to facilitate successful and fulfilling career journeys, CPD contributes to Silver’s mission of preparing innovative practitioners who are profound agents of change at the individual, organizational, and structural levels.
Academic Year 2022-2023 CPD Highlights include:
In partnership with Social Work Practice Curriculum Chairs Dr. Diane Mirabito, Dr. Kathrine Sullivan, Dr. Anne Dempsey, Dr. Nicholas Lanzieri and faculty members, CPD completed 110 classroom presentations in BS- and MSW-level Practice classes, engaging 1,542 students. The Office also provided 275+ 1:1 individual career coaching sessions with students and hosted 28 events, including alumni career panels, workshops on job search and career readiness skills and group sessions on community and identity development.
CPD also engaged NYU Silver’s inaugural Alum-in-Residence, Luisa Lopez, who delivered a culminating report with recommendations to improve climate and belonging for Latine students. Also, CPD Faculty Champion Professor Pia Hargrove provided guidance and support to BS and MSW students on various aspects of personal and career development through weekly drop-in hours and two “Fireside Chats.”
Through our Office of Global and Lifelong Learning (OGLL), Silver serves as a major postgraduate training center for practicing social workers, mental health counselors and related professionals. We host in-person and online workshops, seminars and conferences that focus on the most current approaches to working with diverse populations while teaching the application of theory to practice. We also offer 13 post-master’s certificate programs that give professionals in-depth knowledge to enhance their treatment strategies and improve their approaches and skills. All programs are NYSED and ASWB/ACE accredited.
Academic Year 2022-2023 OGLL Highlights include:
OGLL enrolled over 150 licensed professionals in the self-study Post-Master’s Certificate Program in Trauma-Informed Clinical Practice. Meanwhile, the Office’s live, online Post Master’s Certificate Program in Child and Family Therapy expanded its global reach with participants from China, Panama, and India as well as the U.S.
In partnership with NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Applied Psychology, OGLL held a two-day, in-person conference on “Clinical Work in a Brand New World: Re-envisioning Mental Health in the 21st Century.” A self-study webinar “Meeting the Needs of a Grieving Community: Bereavement Training After COVID-19” self-study webinar, created in conjunction with Silver’s Zelda Foster Studies Program in Palliative and End-of-Life Care, was completed by over 125 registrants.
OGLL’s collaboration with community partners grew to include HealthFirst, the Staten Island Department of Education, Saint Vincent’s Hospital, the PATH Program, and CUNY Immigrant Health.
