In addition to the NYU Silver’s main campus at 1 Washington Square North in Manhattan, the school has 3 branch campuses, offering a social work education that is both regional and international in scope. During the 2022-2023 academic year, our students and faculty distinguished themselves through scholarship and outreach.
Rockland County, New York
NYU Silver’s campus in Rockland County is situated at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, New York. The Two-Year, 16-Month, and Advanced Standing full-time MSW program pathways are available at the Rockland County campus, as are the Extended and Extended One Year Residence part-time/full-time pathways. The Campus Coordinator is Dr. Aminda Heckman.
This year, student Rebeca Campos-Baccas had the distinction of being a two-times recipient of the Cara Haefner Rockland Scholarship (in 2022 and 2023). The scholarship was generously donated by Laurie and Ralph Haefner in memory of their daughter, Cara, who graduated from the Rockland campus in 2014.
In October, the campus also participated in and raised money for the Out of the Darkness, a fundraising walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Adjunct Instructor of Creative Arts Therapy, Professor Carol Lagstein, published an article in the November issue of The Journal of the American Art Therapy Association titled “Instructional Content in Undergraduate Education in Art Therapy.” Professor Lagstein also serves as the Director of Art Therapy at St. Thomas Aquinas College. She and her four colleagues (who all also serve as directors of undergraduate art therapy programs) worked for two years to refine and present their research. Their hope, according to Professor Lagstein, is that this article will serve as “a frame to establish national standards for undergraduate art therapy education.”
Westchester County, New York
Silver’s campus in Westchester County is situated at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. The Two-Year and Advanced Standing full-time MSW program pathways are available at the Westchester County campus, as are the Extended and Extended One Year Residence part-time/full-time pathways, the MSW/MA Dual Degree in Child Development, and the Non-Matriculated exploratory option. Dr. Aminda Heckman is also the Campus Coordinator, and Lori Stasieluk is the Program Administrator.
In September, Adjunct Lecturer Billye Jones published a book, titled We Can Prevent Child Sexual Abuse: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers.
Two students from the campus presented papers at the International PsychoHistorical Association’s 45th annual virtual conference, “Group Identity and the Sources of Conflict.” Kevin McGinnis‘ presentation was titled “Ideology as Hate: Analyzing Texas Governor Abbott’s Anti-Transgender Directive.” Marisa Office‘s presentation was, “Who Cares? The Policy Implications of American Ambivalence Toward Older People.”
Shanghai, China
Silver’s MSW Program at Shanghai and New York is the only MSW program of an American university in China. The program consists of a generalist practice curriculum in Shanghai followed by a specialized practice curriculum in clinical social work in New York City. Dr. Qingwen Xu is the Campus Coordinator.
In April, the MSW Program at Shanghai and New York hosted a two-day, interdisciplinary conference on “Healthy Aging in a Changing Society.” The event was held with collaboration from Duke Kunshan University Global Health Research Center and Center for the Study of Contemporary China, Fudan University Department of Social Work, and Huadong Hospital. Over the course of two days, experts from fields including medicine, sociology, demography, anthropology, nursing, public health, and social work, shared their knowledge and perspectives on the challenges and opportunities ahead.
In April, MSW student Regina Wu received the CSWE 2023 Partners in Advancing Education for International (PIE) Social Work Award.
