Group Research Project:
Color Emotion Sensor Eyewear
In this group research project we decided to make an eyewear that has the ability to see emotions from colors. After reading the text, The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin. In this reading, they discussed about in the City of Omelas, everyone is living in happiness. However, there is a child of misery that only feels misery, and no one else is Omelas is able to feel misery. Therefore, after thinking about the five senses. We chose sight. Then, We wanted to built an eyewear that allows people to see how they are feeling through different colors, and each color acts as an expression and every color has it own meaning. This eyewear serves as an emotional sensor because when you put on the object, you are able to detect the meaning of the different colors as emotions. The colors the emotional eyewear sensor can detect are :Red, Pink, Purple, Green, White, Yellow, and Blue. Each color has its own meaning in terms of emotions. For example, Red means anger, pink means compassion, purple means loyalty, Green means healing, blue means sad, yellow means happiness, and white means innocence. As a result, we decided to use cardboards, and paint a 20cm x 20cm square to represent each color, and there is seven colors. Therefore, we each painted one color and each color has a meaning to it.

For the Eyewear, we first started to sketch and we decided to make it an goggle style eyewear with two standing frames is because when people in Omelas put on the goggles they can see how everyone is feeling through colors. In addition, we decided for the back of the emotion sensor eyewear we putted these wires not as decorations. The wires on the back of the eyewear is an important part of the eyewear that allows to process the information of colors to the people from the eyewear. The overall colors of the goggles is black and gray because it represents the world where people can not sense a lot of emotions. Therefore, in the two frames of the eye frame there is a scientific eyeball drawing and magnifying shapes because these drawings are there to represent how when putting on the eyewear the emotion sensor can detect emotions. On top of that, I added the wire lashes for decorations and making the eyewear more aesthetic.

In the process of making the goggles, we used the process of cardboards. First we made frames of the eyewear and we traced it on the piece of cardboard. Then we used the utility knives to cut the out the outer frame of the eyewear. Then, we wanted to create the pieces that wraps around the eyewear. After cutting out the pieces, we used a hot glue gun to glue the pieces together.
After the glue, we cut the wires to make the eyewear stay on our heads. Then we measured one of our head, then we glue the wires on to the eyewear making sure the eyewear can be put onto our heads. After that, we glued the lashes to the eyewear.
When the glue finished drying, we started to paint the eye wear. The back pieces were painted black. In the eye frames, one of the frames is gray and the other one is white to make the eye frame pop out more. This also has a purpose of trying to convey the theme of leaving in the a world with only one emotions. Lastly, waiting for the paint to dry, we drew the scientific eyeball and magnifying designs to the frames to make the eyewear more visually appealing.
Some obstacles we encountered while building this eyewear is at first we struggle with what size to make the eye wear because we had a smaller size. However, when using the utility knives to cut the eye wear. My group member messed up, so we had to restart over. In addition, the paint took a long time to dry. When we painting on the cardboard, it had some errors. However, after many attempts we were able to get the design working. In terms of group work, we were efficient with meetings and staying to get the work done. We were working as a group to get the stuff done.
For the final performance, we will have one person put on the eyewear and the other five members will hold up the color, and it can be act out as the eye wear is able to detect the colors through seeing it and telling the feelings based on the color.

Attached Below is the link to the videos of the artifact: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1cX0rsGDG4uDqIfL4PUQZzb6VqIOEQG4V?usp=drive_link
During the presentation of the artifacts, one group performances that really stood out to me was Group H, The “Barbie AI” because the changing closet was an interesting idea. In addition, the props that was used in the performance made sense based on their narration. I also found the narrations to be matching the artifact. I also definitely see that how this artifact might be use in the future for the conveniences of getting ready in the morning.
