The Waiting Room is a production of the NYU Shanghai Spring 2020 Creative=Writing=Creative=Translation class, featuring Hoiyan Guo, Xiao Liang, Haitian Ma, Alexandra Mathew, Tian Tian W.Y and Shiny Shuan-Yi Wu.
Here, you will find work written in, and translated into and from, English and Chinese, with a little German thrown in for good measure.
Students collaborated with one another to author creative translations of one another’s creative writing and critical reflections.
Students also worked to translate and creatively interpret writers ranging from Wang Wei to Rainer Maria Rilke to Mu Xin to Alice Notley.
Reading one writer’s or translator’s work will lead you to the work of one or more collaborators, tracing just a few of the lines that have resulted from this semester’s co-production. So settle in and make the most of your time in The Waiting Room: Read something (or watch something, or listen…).
