Name of Project: Inside a Flower
Concept: The second picture, is a metaphorical understanding of the left picture that represents humans and the concept of understanding beauty. A person’s beauty can be viewed through the eyes that focus on appearances and can be altered through makeup, dressing, and surgery or it can refer to a person’s personality including his/her mind and character. The second image is trying to portray both of those perspectives as a whole on how to view beauty. In between the head I photoshopped a combination of perfectly pink flowers but also a few dead flowers and petals that symbolizes how everyone has some kind of flaws to their individual “beauty” and although something may seem pretty on the outside, that should not be the entire understanding of someone because everyone has a combination of physical and emotional flaws or scars that make us who we are. They make us unique, special, and most importantly, beautiful. The tunnel/circle where I am reaching out represents the truth and the desire to grab people’s attention that one is beautiful although flawed. So the tunnel in this case symbolizes the rose as a physical being and the outer borders of it but figuratively, the rose has more meaning to it.
Process: I began my photoshopping to the second picture by cutting out a side of my face using the pen tool to draw out the shape. After I made a layer of the side of my face, I moved it down to create space in between my face to add the flowers. I decided to add flowers in between my face because I wanted to incorporate flowers into this picture to explicitly show the connection with the first picture. Because I wanted to incorporate the imperfect-perfect beauty theme, I cut out brown/rotten flowers from other pictures I’ve taken and added them in an alternating order with the pink flowers and green leaves. After the center of my piece is done, I wanted to have the background of my first image the same for the photoshopped image. To do so, I figured the best way to execute this is by cropping the tunnel/circle out. This also coincidentally adds to the concept of the project.
Conclusion: If I had more time or had more opportunities for critiques, I would work on photoshopping my tunnel better to make it look less “dirty.” I actually took this picture by putting my phone in my washing machine and then opened the flash option. However if I could not edit the circle better, I might have just cleaned the rim of my washing machine.
