VoiceThread

VoiceThread is an asynchronous multimedia presentation and discussion tool that allows users to contribute “posts” around a central piece of content. VoiceThread uses voice recording, webcam recordings, annotation, and other features to encourage student engagement and exchange. For a brief overview of the tool, watch the video playlist at voicethred.com.

Teaching Scenarios

Use VoiceThread for the following scenarios:

  • Pre-recording slides with narration — students will be able to leave questions and comments on your pre-recorded lectures.
  • Have students create their own multimedia presentations — you and their classmates will also be able to engage in discussions centered around the media they create.

3 Steps to Set Up VoiceThread in NYU Brightspace

  • Step 1. Add VoiceThread to your course site

VoiceThread is integrated as a Quicklink in the Content area and the rich text editor in NYU Brightspace. To access VoiceThreads, the instructor must complete the following steps:

    1. Navigate to the Content tool in the NYU Brightspace course site.
    2. Click on the Unit or Lesson where you would like to add VoiceThread.
    3. Click the Add Existing button.
    4. Click the More option, and select VoiceThread.
    5. VoiceThread will load in the new window. If you receive an error message, ensure that voicethread.com is permitted to save and store cookie data. Generally, a lock icon, stop sign, or other icon will appear in the address bar of the browser to notify you that cookies or popups were blocked. Click the icon to change the permissions for voicethread.com.
  • Step 2. Create a VoiceThread

Click the VoiceThread link you just added and select course view. Then choose to create a new VoiceThread follow the instructional video below.

  • Step 3. Share with students

Once you finish uploading and commenting on the slides, open the dropdown menu on the top left corner, click on the “Edit” button and click again on “Share and return to Course.” Update your permission settings on the popup window to allow student comments and click “Submit/share with ‘Your course.‘“
