Online Teaching
CTL’s Online Teaching Getting Started Guide could help faculty who are new to teaching online get started.
NYU Shanghai is using NYU Zoom as the online teaching app. The teaching with NYU Zoom guide will offer guides through account activation to session scheduling. This Zoom learning guide could be shared with students to get them prepared.

Best practice for teaching with Zoom:
- Keep the Zoom app updated to the latest version and remind students to do so.
- Make sure the network connection is stable; use a wired connection if possible.
- Use a headset if needed for better audio performance.
- Make a test run with TA(s) or students.
- Restart the computer and Sign in to the Zoom app with NYU SSO prior to class. Start class session 15 mins ahead in case any technical issues come up.
- Always have a backup plan.
Online Assessments
For those who would like to convert an in-person exam to an online test, the Quizzes tool in NYU Brightspace could support it. It allows instructors to use Respondus LockDown Browser(need request) and Monitor to host a more secure online exam experience, if necessary. Alternatively, Gradescope, fully integrated into NYU Brightsapce, could better fit exams that include Math/Science notation.
Best practice for online tests:
- Offer test runs with students to familiarize them with the process if new technology is adopted.
- Use question pool or order randomizing to avoid cheating between students.
- Prepare 15-20 minutes for the authentication process if you plan to use Respondus LockDown Browser.
- Prepare a backup plan.
