Assessment is a collaborative, intentional, and iterative process of gathering and analyzing information to improve student learning. In this process, instructors would design different activities to get to know students’ learning outcomes.
Scenario #1
Professor A is giving an Essay assignment.
The Assignment tool in NYU LMS would be a good solution for Professor A. It would help collect students’ submissions digitally, Professor A could also offer grades, online annotation and feedback to students with the same tool. Besides, the Assignment tool has the Plagiarism checking service TurnItIn integrated which would be a great help for Essay Assignment. Learn more
Scenario #2
Professor B teaches Math and would like to give some handwriting homework.
Gradescope, a web-based assignment submission, and grading platform is integrated into NYU LMS. It streamlines the grading of paper-based, digital, and coding assignments. It features roster sync and grade sync with NYU LMS. Students could upload their work as scanned files or pictures taken by their phones and indicate their answers with questions the instructor set up. Online annotation is also available with Gradescope. Learn more
Assignment tool in NYU LMS is also a great option if you are looking for simple solutions. Students could upload their scanned work or picture taken with their phone. The online annotation feature saves your time for grading them. Learn more
VoiceThread, a multiple media discussion tool could also serve the needs of Professor B. Students could upload their homework as pictures or scanned files, and the instructor could even offer oral feedback by giving voice comments. Learn more
Scenario #3
Professor C is about to give a test with 65 multiple-choice questions and some other questions in other types.
The Quizzes tool in NYU LMS could help Professor C to accomplish this task. It enables Professor C to create and manage points-measured assessments with auto-grading for objective questions. Grades could be easily linked with the gradebook and calculated in the final grade calculation. Learn more
Gradescope also has the online assignments feature that could serve to test. Especially if you want to have the handwriting part included in your test. Online assignments let you create questions directly on Gradescope. Students will be able to log in and submit responses within the Gradescope interface. For some types of questions (multiple-choice, select all, and short answer), you can also indicate the correct answer ahead of time, and student submissions will be automatically graded. Learn more
NYU Survey Tool(Qualtrics) and Google form could also work for low-stake tests. Qualtrics does a better job in more question type, more control on settings, and logic design. Both tools are very easy and user-friendly for students as test-takers, capable to save student responses as they go. However, they are not recommended options unless you have previous experiences with it. They do need more time for test preparation and scores would need to be input to NYU LMS manually. Learn more
Scenario #4
Prof D is preparing students’ final project, students would be divided into 4 groups, and each group would submit a project proposal, prepare a 15-minute presentation, and submit the slides.
The assignment group submission feature would help Professor D to collect project proposals and slides in groups. For presentations, especially for presentations with remote students, Zoom would do the trick.
VoiceThread Assignment feature is also a good solution for asynchronous presentation creation within group.
