Memory Soundscape

In my Memory Soundscape, I wanted to convey the memory of pulling an all-nighter with my friends. Throughout the piece, I used the sound of a rhythmic knocking, similar to a clock ticking, to signify the passage of time. The piece starts off with the sound of crickets chirping to represent nighttime. I used the sound of laughter, typing, and sounds of conversation to show the early stages of pulling an all-nighter, where it’s possible to have fun and talk with friends while doing work. In the background, I used a creaking and faint, heavily edited screaming to show the subconscious buildup of stress. Eventually, fatigue and delirium hit, which I represented with a snapping sound and the sudden introduction of a wind sound effect, while the original sounds of conversation cut off. I also edited this introduction with the effect “weaponized effects”, which I thought accurately represented the hollow, ringing feeling in this stage of an all-nighter. The laughter, which slowly grew more hysterical, changes to crying in this section before fading out. This soundscape of late night delirium consists mostly of the sound of wind, faint screaming, and the sound of the knocking/clock ticking. After a while, this section is interrupted by birds chirping. In the all-nighter experience, this is where I snap out of the “delirium” state and realize that it’s officially the next day. To show this, I gradually added in the sound of traffic on top of the bird sounds, representing the rest of the city “waking up”, as well as the creaking sound again, as the realization and stress returns. The knocking gets louder and louder, finally ending abruptly with a final knock.
