Designing for a world without screens

I thought that this concept was really interesting. I wasn’t sure how we might eliminate screen from our daily life and never quite knew just how many of the apps on our phones can be completed without the use of the screen.

One of the speakers talks about the grouping of UI and UX and how one is the creation of screens and the other is the figuring out of experience. I never really how the user experience is seperate from just the UI but the constant association between the two led me to believe that the for a good experience, a screen is necessary. This makes me ask why they use this grouping started and at what point is a screen no longer necessary for an experience, or if all UX can do without the UI.

When one of the speaks talked about the back pocket phone apps, where the company went from having all these steps to only two, by removing the screen, I thought of my own experience. On my phone, I am able to open and close my family’s garage door. My dad added a geofence, so that if certain conditions were met, the door would open automatically. But when the door doesn’t open for whatever reason, my first thought is to use my phone, after driving without the garage opener in the car for awhile, I kept forgetting the new one my dad had installed into the car. On my walks home, I’ll reach for my phone instead of using the keypad by garage. I never really considered before how the intermediate step of a screen might complicate a process rather than simplify it.

Overall idea, I found the talk to be informative and practical. I would say that in talking about ambient interfaces and input through sensors, I can see a future where these technologies are normal. I think the concerns for this technology are valid, but I also think this is not the first time we have adapted technology. History has demonstrated how humanity is adaptable. I am curious to see in what ways we might move towards a paperless society.
