I would say that learning and reading about industrial design has made me realize how integral industrial design is to the way our world works. Without industrial design, the objects that we use on our day to day basis would not exist, such our phones, desks, and chairs. I also don’t think I would have realized how much though and consideration goes into industrial design. In considering both the consumer and manufacturer, one must be considerate of every specific detail of their product and they will imply. These products must be made with the idea of how they will be used and limited by factors such as cost and feasibility. Looking at the things around us, we can then consider what the intended purpose of each detail in the design was. During our class session, we discussed the metal used on the Nest thermostat and how that was changed to that of a cheaper metal due to the use of the product, which shows the consideration of how consumers use the product and how the manufacturers can make a product more effectively. This example also demonstrates the need for adaptability as products are often in need of revision. Overall, I would consider industrial design to be quite interesting as it forces people to ask why a product or an object was made the way it was.
