Final Project: Essay

A innovative way to do a traditional jigsaw puzzle, where a pair of people must communicate to solve the puzzle. One person can see the image of the puzzle and the other can move the pieces. The game is for fun and to determine how effective one is at communication.

The two people must rely on another to communicate what they see and do to achieve their desired result, a solved puzzle. Instead of the traditional shapes of a jigsaw puzzle, these pieces will be hexagons, so the players can rotate the piece in a greater variety of ways. The pieces will have an identifier shared by both sides. The player that can see the image, will see which tiles are placed where according to the other player. The other player can then move their pieces according to the first player’s instructions. Only upon a submission of some sort can the first player see the changes that were made. I will need to first narrow down the specifics and feasibility of this project, such as how the puzzle will be determined or how to tell if the pieces are in the right spot. Then, I will have to begin coding, to set up the views of both participants. The final part will be connecting the controls to the movement and rotation of the pieces. After, user testing and working out the kinks.

This idea relates to the projects from my research, (Sisyphus – Construction, Deconstruction, Power and Resistance and Through Artificial Eyes – The inevitable cultural perspectives of NNs), in which the user provides a prompt and the AI responds with what it knows and their both play a role in their success. This project aligns with my definition of interaction as the two players are conversing with the device and acting as a result of the prompt on the screen. This project could serve a new multiplayer game for the future in which we advance existing analog games. And the fact that this is a puzzle, suggests that a wide variety of people can enjoy the game.
