Memory Soundscape

Concept- The concept of my soundscape is based on the memory of going out to the bar or club at night. I am a DJ so my experience is different from the average person going to the club. In my soundscape, I wanted to depict the sounds that can be heard in the club such us the chattering of people, opening of drinks, using the bathroom. I also recorded sounds of me setting up my equipment in the club; the unzipping of the bag, writing down songs, and pressing buttons. When you are drunk the voices of people can be distorted as well. This is something I was trying to show as well.

Process- Firstly I recorded sounds that are reminiscent of being in a bar or club, so I recorded a crowd, opening a can, pouring a drink, swallowing, DJ effects, flushing urinal. However I wanted to create a timeline of my night so I added sounds like footsteps , opening doors to create a sense of time. I also have conversation with many people so I recorded peoples voices. I used the shotgun mike and internal mike to do this.

For the editing process, I used 4 tracks. I added noise reduction to all of the tracks. I cut and sequenced the tracks to get the desired result. A very useful function was the DeNoise function because it removed al the background sound and static. When it came to the crowd noise I used the Cave Reverb effect, this makes it seem like the crowd is in the background making it sound more realistic. I used an Echo effect on the voice to make it seem distorted. This was to create the effect of being intoxicated. I faded the sounds in and out strategically to make the track seamless.

Conclusion- If I had had more time I would’ve added in more elements , like conversation or glasses breaking to make the experience more interesting. I would’ve also spent more time refining the sounds in Audition to make them as realistic as possible. After explaining my work to people they were able to understand it more.
