The inspiring talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie made me bring back memories from last September. I grew up an lived in Mongolia for my entire life. Although I travelled around countries like China, Russia, or Japan, I realized how my perspective on Chinese people were just stereotypes before coming to this diverse college in September last year.
We watched this video in our GPS class last semester too, but what had come to mind that I didn’t realize before was I’m also one of those people who believe in the stereotypes. I always complained that people claim that I’m Chinese, or I must be good at Math and Physics because I’m asian. However, I also thought I wouldn’t be able to live in China because I don’t like to eat Chinese food, or the people are rude, but after coming to Shanghai and traveling around other Chinese provinces, I realized how nice Chinese people were. When I went to Huangshan people who I talked to gave me free cookies, or huangshan particular snacks, they wanted me to enjoy my time in Huangshan. Thus, the talk made me realise how stereotypical I was too.
