Recitation 4: Drawing Machine

The Project consisted in the creation of a drawing machine together with another partner, controlled by a stepper motor that moved the handle. The collaborative job asked for the creation of two separate machines using the potenciometer, and the stepper motor. Uniting both of them created a machine that permitted both users to draw. The process was not too complicated and was problem free, the only thing that was complicated was the fact that when we united both machines to create the drawing machine. My partners machine had difficulties controlling itself. The project proceed as planned, with no mayor problems.

Question 1:

What kind of machines would you be interested in building?Add a reflection about the use of actuators, the digital manipulation of art, and the creative process to your blog post.

I would be interesting in creating a machine that helps people feel better with themselves, maybe a machine that allows people to feel less excluded in a simple way.  This would need a stuffed animal that has predetermined voice outputs depending on the force of the hug you give the animal. In this case the animal acts in a way that make people that need a hug to send a positive message to the user. This positive message makes the user feel better when he needs it.

Question 2:

Choose an art installation mentioned in the reading ART + Science NOW, Stephen Wilson (Kinetics chapter). Post your thoughts about it and make a comparison with the work you did during this recitation. How do you think that the artist selected those specific actuators for his project?

Louis-Philippe Demers and Gary Steward’s project are similar in concept as our project. Even though the project vary in size and reach, the concept of controlling robots with the human body is the same. The magnitude in the project is the one that varies, being much more complex the project in the reading. The installation is very interesting because it tries to emulate the movement f human dancers to make art.
