This TED talk discusses how people may be blinded by a single story. Like what the speaker talks about her experience, our perspectives towards some certain people are very easily affected by a single story. It is also like a stereotype that when people hear the same thing about the certain group of people, again and again, they will have a stereotype that this group of people only have these characteristics. What impressed me most is the power. The power is to make it the definitive story of that person. This makes me think about social media’s influence. For example, if the news always reports some criminals of defrauding are from city X. Gradually, when people meet someone from city X, the first time comes into their mind is defrauding. If the news describes that city Y has the most beautiful view, people may ignore that city Y also has delicious food.
A single story limits people’s view since they forget that there are a lot of stories to form one people, one city, and even one country. A single story is true and real, but it is just a single one. It is not complete enough to represent and describe something. This TED talk reminds me of this simple but easily-overlooked truth.
