Video Project – Matthew Ballou

Video Project

Background:

When my partners and I were initially conceptualising this project, we wanted to keep three things in mind: interactivity, use of the web as a medium, and the intentional use of particular film-making techniques. Ultimately, we decided upon a single idea to meet all three of these goals: an interactive social media website. Different videos on the site incorporated different types of film-making techniques, such as a static camera taking a portrait of an interviewee to a moving, amateurish front-camera video recorded with a smartphone. To incorporate both interactivity and the use of the web as a medium into the project, we added in the ability to like, share, and comment on posts.

Process:

We divided up the work into areas of expertise. I was solely responsible for all of the HTML and CSS markup and programming using JavaScript, whereas both Ploy and Winnie were in charge of the video editing and sound design. Every member on the team, however, worked on creating images and text for the site.

Even though this wasn’t particularly the focus of the project, I’m quite proud with how the JavaScript turned out, despite some of its flaws. All of the posts made on the website are generated by a script. All you need to do to make a post is give it a small amount of information instead of having to hard-code everything in. Not only did this save time making posts, it also saved time editing posts, adding new functionality such as the comment system, allowing Winnie and Ploy to make posts with minimal error, etc.

Conclusion:

In all, this project was much more enjoyable than the audio one, though it was definitely more stressful. I feel that I adequately learned how to record videos, utilise them on the web, and to allow the user to interact with them in a deliberate and desired way.
