Kinetic Light: DMX Light Assignment–Eric(Candy Bi)

Project: Aurora

Team members: Louis, Skye

Process: Unlike LED strips we use before, DMX is way bigger. Considering the fact that it could give a bigger range of light on the wall yet could only light up one color at one time, we decided to imitate Aurora in nature. I have only seem aurora online, so I feel really excited. We googled online and download a image of aurora and put it in AI to get the color index of it. We found that it is usually green accompanied by some sort of purple, yellow and blue. These color later became the color we used to code.

The project has stages: pure green fading in and out, green and blue, green, blue and purple, green, yellow and blue. We made the DMX light in the middle a little taller than the other two so that together they could create an effect of light moving around. Each color differs slightly in how bright it is and how fast it fades so that the light would not be too statistic but rather more organic. Initially, we were thinking about having the light mapping all over the room, yet found that way we might lose the part of two color mix together.

To match the visual part, we found a light music that also create an atmosphere of relaxing and pleasant.

Overall, we were happy with what we got for this project shows a possibility of a grand light show if we could have more DMX lights being controlled. We are really excited if we could change the entire room into a live aurora show. The experience of lying in the coach on 9th floor, watching the lights fading in and out with all the lights closed at night is an impressive and touching memory.
