Jasper Liu’s article, “Visualizing the 4 Essential of Design Thinking”, offers an interesting distinction between an design’s objective and its target problem. Initially, this separation was not apparent to me; however, Liu’s articulation provides significant clarity. What a designer strives to create is completely separate from what they are attempting to remedy. For example, creating an app or device is within the realm of solutions. What those apps or devices strive to solve are the target problem.

The phrase “find the right problem” struck me as interesting because instead of attempting to solve every issue found the designer is advised to find the most suitable problem to tackle. By “right problem” the author means an issue that best fits the designer’s ability and circumstance. In turn this allows for the most suitable solutions to be developed.

Liz Sanders’s An Evolving Map of Design Practice and Design Research presents a clear distinction between user and research based design. While I understand why this distinction is important I am unsure as to how apparent differences are created. How are distinct differences created in the final design if both methods are striving to solve the same issue?
