Inspirations:
My three greatest design inspirations are Raf Simons, Eiko Ishioka, and Ludwig Göransson.
Raf Simons Paris AW 2019
Simons, as a fashion and furniture designer, use his collections to challenge traditional style choices.
Ishioka Costume Design Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Ishioka’s costume design portfolio shows a clear overarching style however, in each project she is able to offer something new and interesting in her pieces. The visually stimulating aspects of her designs are not relegated to color and silhouette. She incorporates texture and structure in her clothes.
Göransson’s film score work show how the background work is just as important as the final product. Particularly, his score for Black Panther (2018) works to construct an auditory story with the choice of instruments, rhythm sequences and vocal arrangements.
Dream Project
My dream project would be something that offers an immersive environment that tries to reinvent a classic piece of literature. I feel that the best way to achieve this is through film. The various elements of film offer an effective medium to convey designers’ vision. It allows the individual to share a story, aesthetic and underlying desires through an agglomeration of visual and auditory pieces.
An interesting constraint of popular film is its inability to reach the other three senses. While it is possible to have 3D and 4D films, I do not believe that most uses actually enhance the immersive environment presented by the film. Instead it may offer a more comprehensive experience but not a more effective experience.
