Final Project Proposal–Steve Sun

Communications lab final project proposal

For this project we drew our inspiration from The Seven Deadly Sins, which is a concept in Catholicism doctrines. Consisting of pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust, the seven deadly sins are the representatives of all human villainies. However, instead of depicting the seven sins as evil characters, which is the way they had always been treated with in all kinds of media, we are trying to interpret them in a perspective that relates more to normal people’s daily lives. The idea we want to convey through this interpretation is that sometimes a little bit of some of the sins can make the modern hustling life less intimidating, even if the outcome of the sin is “not good” in a utilitarian perspective. For example, eating junk food when one is stressed, or having just a little longer sleep before rushing like hell not to be late for school and so on. For other sins, we plan to interpret them as the current living and socializing condition of the modern people especially young people like us. For example they could be the quite wide-spread social phobia among young people, or the desire of buying a lot of goods online without efficient of money. In both ways, our ultimate goal is through re-interpreting the seven sins, vividly depict how young people’s daily life look like nowadays. And if we got comments like “that’s so true!”, our goal is successfully reached.

Our idea of seven deadly sins comes from the movie “Seven” directed by David Fincher. The movie tells the story of a serial killer who murdered seven people including himself and one of the two detectives who are in change of arresting him, assigning one of the seven sins to each person based on their action. Based on that, we came up with the idea of no one is innocent from the sins. Also, the style of our project is inspired by an official account in Wechat called “GQ Lab”. This account uses interactive comics to illustrate social phenomena in an entertaining and sarcastic tone while get the readers to reflect on their everyday life.

We are planning to have one page for each sin. Using a basic interactive way like click, drag, hover and so on, the user could interact with the main character(s) in the scene until they finally reach an “ending” for the characters which illustrates how we interpret the concept the sins. For example, in the scene of envy, we are planning to have a bunch of faces talking and laughing in one side of the screen and a small, lonely man in the other side. When the cursor hovers on the talking faces, sounds of people chatting are played, while the man on the side grows smaller. And when the cursor moves away, everything stops. And this scene ends with the man become small to invisible, while the people around scattered away. Our main characters in the scenes would be mainly hand-drawn stick figures, and we plan to make them move around and interact with the user using p5 animation. And we will use css styling as well as audio and possibly videos to make it vivid. The reason for choosing hand drawing is that it is easier for us to have better control over the style as well as avoiding inconsistency. And the internet is a great medium for this project because we can easily embed the interactive elements into it and as the internet becomes highly widespread nowadays, we deem it a great media for our ideas to spread.

The Concept

In the world today we are often presented with a number of phenomenons that transcend national borders and become examples of international problems that affect each and everyone of us in some capacity. Such a problem was brought up in conversation between Julia and myself. Julia presented the idea of creating an internet art project central to the concept of “catcalling”.

Catcalling is typically defined as “rude sexual remarks made by men passing women on the street” (Adapted from Urban Dictionary) although typically expressed in the situation above, these remarks can be made to any person at anytime. This phenomena is nondiscriminatory as it affects all people in all places in some form, thus, raising awareness about this issue is important.

The concept of our project is to present an infographic website on catcalling whilst using elements such as audio and visual to create interjections/distractions whilst the reader is reading. This is done to position the reader in a position of experiencing what it’s like to be catcalled and in the process losing focus of what they’re doing (reading the information) due to external factors beyond their control. The goal is to incite a level of discomfort in order to encourage reflection and subsequently a review of individual actions towards this issue.

Sources

One artist of significance in this project is the creators of the “Carbon Budget” by World Resource Institute. This is an example of an infograph that is clear, concise and informative. It presents relevant information in an easily readable format with a color display that is calming for the reader. This relates to the desired format of the website to provide information to the readers about Catcalling in a simple, easy to follow format. This also allows us to manipulate the remainder of the space (next to the infographic) to include distractions.

Another artist of significance in this project is Professor Leon Eckert’s. I appreciated the thought and creativity that went into the checkbox elements on the left hand side of his website that utilised P5. In our internet art project we wish to emulate a similar concept and utilize similar elements but not have the user be able to choose. In this way we maintain the interruptions aspect that we striving for. The interactions on Professor Eckert’s website are cleverly designed and inspired the disruptive elements of our project.

Production

In order to complete this project, there are a lot of mediums that will be used. In order to create a disorientating but dynamic experience for the users, both audio and video will be used. The website will feature information about catcalling such as prevalence, types, and responses. Interjections will use audio and video of catcalling examples to catch the interactior off guard. In regards to the technical execution of the project, we wish to draw upon all of the skills we have already learnt especially in HTML, Javascript and P5.

The web page itself will be relatively simplistic to focus the intention on the information. Embedded into the webpage through links, alerts and other onclicks will be distractions such as audio and visual elements and repetitive alerts to distract the user. The user will navigate the website as they would any other website just with the obstacles of distractions to interfere with how easily this process is. This methodology is appropriate as it mimics a real life situation in which someone could be walking down the street and be disrupted in a “catcalling way”.

Final Project Proposal – Demi Mishiev

Concept

Even though some people do not believe in evolution, I find myself a believer. About 3.5 Billion years ago the first life on earth has appeared. We still don’t know how life came to existence, however the theory of evolution helps us understand how life on earth diversified into so many different species and how some creatures still undergo changes in order to adapt to modern era. I was always fascinated by this theory, it made me think, what if and what’s next. With this project I intend to take user on an adventure through time. From the first recorded life to modern society and possibly, the nearby future.

Sources

Inspiration for the project comes from three sources.

Super Mario Bros., game known and loved by millions around the world. Everyone played  mario at least once. Arcade game where you have to run through the Mushroom Kingdom and save a princess.  It took me many a hour to beat this game and after I am done I start a new one. Simplicity of the world design attracted me time after time. In this project I will attempt to capture the world in all its states using simple graphic style.  To understand more about the way Super Mario utilizes the design of the game to help people understand what they are supposed to do I advise to read a post by Medium. Which breaks down the style of the legendary video game.

If the Moon were only 1 Pixel is one of my favourite web projects ever. Due to its simplicity, informativeness and light humor. Easy controls, where user only need to scroll the page and is able to change the length measuring unit. This project will approach storytelling in the similar manner, while the If the Moon were only 1 Pixel  is one dimensional ( user can only scroll sideways ), I hopefully intend to make the storyboard two dimensional.

Right Here Right Now by FatBoy Slim. Song is hated and loved by millions, however official music video is often overlooked. Music Video shows the evolution process from a simple one cell organism to a human being. My project attempts to accomplish the same, however the timeline is going to be user navigated. Video focuses on one organism, first life, evolving to a human, in my project I intend to make 3 layers where you can follow the subject, underwater, on land and in the sky. All of the layers will feature different cursor, which story you can follow.

Production

One page website controllable by arrow keys and a mouse. From the first life on the planet to known space. While the arrow keys are used for the control of timeline, user can interact with the surroundings through use of custom animated cursors.

First I’ll need to create the entire story timeline as one long picture. I plan to accomplish that by using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects. Upon completion of the storyboard, intend to separate website to div containers, hovering upon which with a mouse will trigger the change in cursor to appropriate era. Depending on the amount of time left, parts of the background are going to be animated or could be triggered by clicking.

Final Project Proposal – Madi Eberhardt

Concept

Music has always been such an important part of my life. It can bring together people all over the world and is enjoyed by every culture. This semester I haven’t been able to use this in a significant way in any of my projects. So for this project, I have decided to create a website in which has a world map displayed with various locations pinpointed. These locations will be California, Hawaii, France, Italy, Spain, South Korea, Nigeria, Sweden, and China. Each time you click on one of these locations, a pop up will appear asking about the mood you are in (happy, sad, chill, or gimme anything). A song from that region and language will then play to offer you a perspective on to the culture. I also will be hand selecting these songs. The reason for this project is because I feel like today people could use more exposure to music from different parts of the world so I think it’s important for my audience to be exposed to some of this.

Sources

My project was influenced by two websites (http://radiooooo.com/ & https://radio.garden). Both of these were introduced to me by Professor Eckert and gave me a lot of inspiration for the project. Both include depictions of the world map and offer various selections of music places around the world (some by different eras, mood, style, etc). The display of the websites is very creative and unique in the way it plays the music and allows the user to interact with the website. Through a collage of options that pop up on the page, it makes it easy and simple for the user to navigate through the site.

Production

In order to accomplish this project, I will first create a visual representation of it on paper. This includes an outline of how the website will appear. Then I will begin coding the first html page which will act as an introduction with a start button. Once you click this, it will take you to the page with the map and music. For the map, I will draw it out in my own style and apply it to the page. The same color palette will be used for the entire project to keep a certain aesthetic to the page. No video will be used as it will just be audio of the music included. Through buttons and pop-ups the user can easily interact with the site by choosing the place to listen to music from and can pick the mood they are in before listening to each song.
