Comic Project: In Progress – Madi Eberhardt & Jamie

One of the parts of our comic that we have made progress in is drawing out our characters. We’ve drawn the main protagonist boy and a few other characters as shown below who the player will eventually meet along the way. Each of the characters were drawn on an iPad/sketchpad by us. We wanted the characters aesthetic to be simple but for them to also have a scary/odd vibe as well.

We’ve also put more twists and details into our plot, giving it more interaction with the player and have begun starting to write down the types of coding we will need (such as mouse onclicks, alerts, and even voiceovers).

Comic Book Progression 1.1 – Demi and Thomas

Project Progression

First off all, we are 80% done with the visual we are going to use.

The visuals are original photos, edited and transformed into a mixed comics style.

The software we are using:

  1. Moment ( IOS Camera app )
  2. Photoshop CC 2019
  3. Atom ( obviously )
  4. Apple’s preview photo app.

In our CSS we are using a background picture, on which the comic book will unfold. The copy of the picture can be found attached below. We are also using css for style of text and button style and positioning.

JavaScript is going to be used for the change of image through a push of the button, for transition between images and through use of functions, opening the right scenario.

The scenario is complete. Unfortunately, all members of  this project signed NDA. For the purposes of keeping you interested for our and not dealing with NDA conseuances, the scenario will remain untold.

Every part of the story consists from 3-7 sequential pictures.

Interactive Comics Progression I – Nan & Val

We decided to focus on a story in the Song Dynasty in China, “Sima Guang breaks the vat” to make it into interactive comics.

Sima Guang breaks the vat: A famous anecdote relates how the young Sima Guang once saved a playmate who had fallen into an enormous vat full of water. As other children scattered in panic, Sima Guang calmly picked up a rock and smashed a hole in the base of the pot. Water leaked out, and his friend was saved from drowning. (Wikipedia)

Regarding the plot, we have decided that we could set two storylines. At the beginning of the story, the user can choose which character he or she would be – Sima Guang or the children to jump into the vat, and let the user make decisions. The result, according to different decisions that the user may make, would be implications of morals like “be careful about the unknow vat” and “don’t be panic when facing an emergency.”

Update (March 7 2019):  We have decided to only make one storyline, but more interactive. This is the storyboard that we have made:storyboard

Currently, we want to modify the comics with reference to this website, and photoshop all the characters individually to plot our new storyline. The sample pictures are as followed:

Shangguan-is-out-of-the-vat everyone-praised-sima Sima-throwed-the-stone

Meanwhile, Val is taking Chinese Art course where she is learning to draw in a traditional Chinese style. We have got inspiration from this website, and thought that we can also make some scene of the story in a style like this:

Traditional-style-of-vat

We will keep updating.

Update (March 7 2019): We decided not to use the traditional style but a modern one because we want to make it a light-hearted story.

We are now photoshopping the images that we can get from the internet, and draw some comic effects referencing Understanding Comics to exaggerate some scenes.

Interactive Comic Progression Post 1 – Taylah Bland and Laila

Progression Blog Post – Taylah and Laila

Laila and I met on Tuesday, March 5th to work through a plan of how best to handle this assignment. Laila had already begun to experiment with Adobe Illustrator whilst also drawing out a story board to document the key points of our story.

Upon discussion with Laila, I really liked her drawings and suggested we keep what she has and start with simple graphics like line drawings. As the story progresses and our protagonists becomes enlightened with this new found ability to appreciate nature, we begin to see an increase in the resolution, quality and complexity of the illustrations.

I have taken responsibility for the photoshop images of nature. I wanted to combine a few pictures of three nature spots (Mt Everest, The Great Barrier Reef, Pyramids of Giza) to showcase not only the beauty of nature but the potential it has for personal transformation.

During this time, Laila will continue to work on the beginning illustrations utilizing the Adobe Illustrator Program.

We plan to meet with Professor Eckert on both Thursday this week (7th and 14th of March) and next week in order to talk over our idea and to consolidate the best possible way to utilize the knowledge we have to create a strong interactive comic.

We also plan to meet up on Sunday with all completed graphics and this will give us just over a week to put them into the browser and create the interactive component of our comic.

I have also done additional research on youtube to look at ways in which we can create simple but effective transitions for our comic. We are trying to use Digital media in its simplest form to convey a very deep and meaningful message in our comic. We are hoping that through utilizing digital media as a platform to present this, we will be creating greater accessibility for a larger demographic.

Attached is a video and some pictures of some of the coding that Laila has started to play around with!
